The Batman: Arkham series redefined superhero games, delivering exceptional storytelling and combat in each of its entries. These Batman games also featured some awesome character designs, one of which has served as a major inspiration for director James Gunn.

In a special IGN breakdown of the latest trailer for The Suicide Squad, Gunn takes a moment to talk about Harley Quinn. He says that he is asked constantly about what she will be wearing in the film. While he does detail her second outfit, the red dress that features in the back half of the film, the most interesting comments are about Harley’s first outfit. During the first portion of the film, she will be wearing a costume exactly like one of her outfits in the Rocksteady games.

Specifically, she will be wearing the costume from Batman: Arkham City. While her nurse outfit in Batman Arkham Asylum is neat, and her look in Batman: Arkham Knight is a nice evolution on Rocksteady’s design, this look is still the most popular amongst fans. Gunn clearly enjoyed it as well, stating that it was one of the designs that he “liked the best” from the “various forms of media" that he looked at. With Gunn having access to every Harley Quinn look from the past few decades, him choosing to use this one inside of the movie is high praise.

It is impossible to miss the similarities between the Arkhamverse Harley Quinn and The Suicide Squad’s version, as their designs are essentially the same. The use of red and black is what makes the design work, as it is seen in Harley’s hair and her outfit. Margot Robbie’s version of the character dons similar pigtails and gloves, and her top has the exact same design as the one that features in Batman: Arkham City. While the actual pattern is different, she wears a choker like the video game version, too.

Though there are some subtle changes, like Gunn flipping the lipstick and eye shadow colors, the only obvious change is the addition of a jacket. Gunn described this as him adding his own touch to the look, and he wanted to put a special phrase on the back. After sharing some funny lines that were ultimately scrapped, Gunn confirms that the back of the jacket will real “Live Fast, Die Clown.” For the most part, though, this is the exact same as the one worn by Harley Quinn in Batman: Arkham City.

With The Suicide Squad’s King Shark being a lot different from the video game version, it is great to see Gunn showing the games some love with his Harley Quinn. While she will not wear it for the entire movie, gamers should still get a kick out of seeing this Batman: Arkham outfit in live action.
