Most of the anti-heroes in The Suicide Squad are considered expendable because they are mostly lesser-known villains, even to some of the most diehard DC fans. However, that doesn't mean that all the expendable characters made the cut. Director James Gunn recently explained why Condiment King is one who didn't get included in the ensemble adventure.

Condiment King is indeed a real Batman villain, though he was originally intended to be a one-off and comic relief in Batman: The Animated Series. The character did eventually make it into the comic books as well, but Gunn still didn't believe he had a need to put Condiment King in the movie, despite making sure he had one "odd-ball" slot in the roster of villains turned heroes.

Gunn said he did want to go away from the more established villains like Mr. Freeze or Man-Bat. However, instead of Condiment King, he picked the "dumbest DC character of all time" in Polka-Dot Man for The Suicide Squad. While speaking to BBC Radio 1 about his choices, Gunn did admit there were other oddball characters considered but he settled on Polka-Dot Man. He was also asked if some of the truly strange villains in the DC universe were ever really considered for The Suicide Squad. The names tossed out included Condiment King, Crazy Quilt, or Clock King. Gunn responded with a rather simple, "No. Nah." He went on to explain there is a difference between the man he chose and some of the other weirdos that were left out.

He said Polka-Dot Man was a sincere character who someone intended to be a real villain for Batman. When Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff created the character, he was somebody they really wanted to go up against heroes and have a real story. On the flipside, Condiment King was always considered to be more of a joke than a real character. He added it was obvious to him that even his creators thought, "oh here's a stupid character."

Gunn also felt as though he could make Polka-Dot Man a kind of compelling character in The Suicide Squad. The character is someone who can actually hurt other people with the polka-dots that come out of his body.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director felt as though he could do something with Polka-Dot Man that would actually make audiences believe the character had a story they could feel bad about. That alone was enough to consider putting him in and keeping Condiment King out.

The Suicide Squad will release on August 6th to both U.S. theaters and HBO Max.
