As players explore the world of Subnautica: Below Zero, they will occasionally see a beacon marking a specific area of the seabed. Once players have met Marguerit Maida, who first appears before they have to track down the Parallel Processing Unit, they will soon see a marker that says "Pilot - Last Known Position."

Updated January 30, 2022, by Jack Pursey: Subnautica: Below Zero's story moments are so few and far between that it can be tempting to simply dart straight to a new marker when one appears. However, this is often a deadly error in Planet 4546B, as lurking in many of the game's biomes are deadly predators that can kill Robin or destroy one of her vehicles that the player has spent a good chunk of time crafting.

Consequently, this list has been updated to warn players of a pair of dangerous predator types that they may come across when trying to reach Subnautica: Below Zero's Pilot - Last Known Position marker, while also pointing out some resources to look out for on the way.

How To Reach The Pilot

Marguerit Maida's base

Players can find entrances to a cave system along the edges of the Lilypad Islands and Tree Spires biomes that border the Purple Vents. Heading to coordinates 102-366-922 will bring them to a secret sea base.

To enter the base, players will need to swim down underneath it, coming up through the pool of water in one of the rooms. This is quite deep, so players will want to ensure they have plenty of oxygen when they start and top up regularly at the oxygen plants that can be found along the way.

What To Do There

Inside Marguerit's base

The first thing players should do here is scan Marguerit's Prawn Suit. Then they can venture through the door where they will come face to face with Marguerit for the second time and meet her pet Snow Stalker. Once Marguerit is convinced that players are not working against her, she will be reasonably willing to give information as long as players can prove their worth.

The main room contains a Seatruck Perimeter Defense Upgrade, so players will want to ensure they pick it up before leaving. There is also a Snowfox vehicle fragment that can be scanned in the center of the room and a test override module that can also be scanned. Finally, players can even scan the pet Snow Stalker to add yet more information to their database.

It is worth returning to the base after players have disabled the tracking satellite tower that Marguerit wants them to deal with, as they will be able to get further into the base and scan more objects. There are no new modules or fragments, but players will be able to get blueprints for an assortment of different build items.

Aggressive Creatures

As mentioned above, Marguerit Maida's underwater base is located in the Purple Vents biome, in a cave system along the edges of the Lilypad Islands and Tree Spires. Unfortunately, aggressive Cryptosuchus' can be encountered en-route to Marguerit's cave, as can the dangerous and frightening Chelicerates. Before heading to the base, it's worth knowing how to handle these two predators in the unfortunate event that one approaches.

Cryptosuchus are far safer than Chelicerates, as they only do 30 bite damage to players as opposed to the Chelicerate's whopping 75 damage bite. Moreover, Cryptosuchus' deafening roar may sound frightening, but they are more bark than bite and will immediately retreat when being attacked, even with just the survival knife.

Chelicerates are trickier to deal with. They are extremely aggressive and deliver some of the most heart-pounding jumpscares in the entire series, with their grab attack often coming as a surprise due to their quiet roar. The best way to deal with Chelicerates is with the Seatruck's Perimeter Defense Upgrade. The upgrade will let players blast electricity, which will scare off a Chelicerate if it gets too close or bites the Seatruck.

To craft the Seatruck Perimeter Defense Upgrade, players need to combine the following items at a Fabricator or Vehicle Upgrade Console:

  • 1x Computer Chip
  • 2x Ruby
  • 1x Power Cell
  • 1x Polyaniline
