Updated November 8th by Russ Boswell: Subnautica Below Zero has been gripping fans of the series for a while now but there are still new players that are flocking to the original release before starting the latest journey. The original Subnautica still holds up extremely well, showcasing its stance as one of the greatest Indie Games ever created. Players that are just jumping into this iconic release will most definitely want to build Ion Power Cells in Subnautica as soon as possible. To better help show players how to get Ion Power Cells in Subnautica, what they do, and what else they can make, the following guide has been updated.

What Are Ion Power Cells?

Subnautica Aurora Base

Ion power cells are used the same way as power cells. Even though there's a lot of things players can do in Subnautica, these cells are used to charge up vehicles so players can drive them around. Before power cells can be implemented, players will first need to make the battery. After the battery is crafted, it's a natural progression to it becoming a power cell and then an ion power cell. All this can be done at the Fabricator.

Batteries can be charged at seabase by using the "Power Cell Charger." Of course, the power will drain when the vehicle is used and even when "The Cyclops" is using any kind of moveable equipment while stationary. A standard power cell can store up to a max of 200 energy but an Ion Power Cell can hold up to 1000 energy.

Unfortunately, players won't find them just lying around Subnautica, they will need the data to craft one. Players will be tasked with going out into the world of Subnautica and finding "Alien Data Terminals" in order to find the appropriate blueprint to build an ion power cell. In this case, the blueprint for the ion power cells is found in the orange alien terminal inside the "Alien Thermal Plant."

Where To Find Ion Power Cell Data

Subnautica Inactive Lava Zone

It can be found inside the "Inactive Lava Zone" that's inside the "Lava Castle." Inside the plant, players will come across two locked doors that will require a purple tablet to unlock. One door will lead players to a "Blue Alien Tablet." This can be used to gain access into the "Primary Containment Facility" at a later time. Which, ultimately, players will be enabled to find other important resources. The other door will have a few other terminals, one of which being the orange terminal which will have the ion power cell blueprint.

How To Make Ion Power Cells And What They Can Make

Subnautica Ion Power Cell

The recipe to make an ion power cell in Subnautica is two ion batteries and one silicone rubber. Now, this battery can hold up to five times the capacity compared to a standard power cell. Therefore, it'll take longer to charge. They will greatly expand a player's capabilities to explore Subanautica's map. The ion power cells can be generally used for the; Cyclops, Seamoth, and Prawn Suit.

Ion Power Cells are also used to craft the Neptune Fuel Reserve. To do so, players will need to combine four Crystalline Sulfur, four Kyanite, two Ion Power Cells, and one Plasteel Ingot.

Subnautica is available on Mac, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
