Subnautica is a massively successful open-world crafting and survival game. Much like Minecraft, it's a success story for the early access model. The game launched in December 2014 and saw numerous updates that added new mechanics and features to its world. Even the narrative would evolve over time.

A full version was met with widespread popularity when it finally released in 2018. This is due in no small part to its appearance on many "Let's Play" channels such as Markiplier or Jacksepticeye who effectively promoted the game by playing it so much. The game, however, has become more expansive over time and as a result many players end up missing certain aspects of the game. Whether its simply Easter eggs or uncommon ways to interact with the world, there is a lot that may go undiscovered by certain players.

8 Jack's Septic Tank

This Easter egg is a reference to the famous YouTuber, Jacksepticeye. The item's appearance consists of a small tank filled with green liquid and a single, large eyeball. Septiceye Sam serves as the primary inspiration for this item. Sam is the profile picture for the channel on YouTube and is the subject of plenty of merchandise. Seán McLoughlin, the owner of the channel, made an entire Let's Play series out of both the early access and officially released version of Subnautica. This Easter egg may have been the developer's way of thanking him for playing.

7 An Unusual Doll

Based on the YouTuber, Markiplier this doll can be found in life pod 7. Markiplier, real name Mark Fischbach, is an outspoken fan of the game. He even made a lengthy Let's Play series in which he explored the game's narrative and environment. The doll bears his likeness at the time such as the dyed red hair (which was done for charity) and it also says lines from his videos (or simply screams) in a high pitched voice.

Mark would finally craft the Unusual Doll in episode 72 of his video series. The doll is stated to have been created by the Lifepod's malfunctioning fabricator.

6 Natural Selection 2 Poster

Subnautica Natural Selection 2 poster in game and real artwork

This Easter egg is found within The Aurora and two explorable wrecks in the Grassy Plateaus, which makes it somewhat easy to find. The Natural Selection series was developed prior to Subnautica and consists of two entries. The first is a mod for Half Life while the second was an officially released title in 2012. The poster is based on real artwork for Natural Selection 2, though it has no significance to the story of Subnautica. It is simply a non-canon reference to the developer's other game.

5 Future Perfect Items

Players can find items in the game that a reference to the game, Future Perfect. Unknown World Entertainment developed the game but it has not seen an update since 2015. As of now it resembles less of a game and more like an early prototype for something that may or may not be a game.

The items that reference Future Perfect are the alien rifle and the doomsday device and can be found in their own cases within the Quarantine Enforcement Platform. This does not seem to indicate any sort of interconnectivity between the two games as they could just be reused assets and nothing more.

4 Tamable Stalkers

Tame A Stalker

Many players might not be aware that they have the ability to tame Stalkers to a certain degree. Stalkers are hostile creatures but giving them a catchable fish will calm them down temporarily. This only applies to wild Stalkers though. Hatched Stalkers remain passive except that they will try to steal cameras an attack player vehicles. Tamed Stalkers will also find metal salvage and bring it back to the player as a gift. This makes them rather nifty assistants in a pinch.

3 Developer Names

Obraxis Prime referenced in dialogue

At many points the player may find something that contains a reference to a developer who worked on the game. When the player first crafts the survival knife they will hear a bit of dialogue that references the planet, Obraxis Prime. This is a reference to Scott "Obraxis" Macdonald, who was an animator who worked on the game.

In another instance, the hive mind of Strader IV mentioned in the Databank is a reference to developer, Cory Strader. Including developer's names in a game is a rather common occurrence in the industry.

2 CHBCLive Tribute

CHBCLive was a forum user and Subnautica player who tragically passed away due to gastric cancer before the game was completed in 2018. As a form of tribute, the developers made him the subject of an Easter egg. This tribute took the form of the Translation Device found in the Primary Containment Facility. CHBCLive was primarily known for making tutorials and translating parts of the game into Chinese. That makes this a rather fitting Easter egg. In-game information states that this device stores linguistic data from over 1,000 different languages.

1 Neebs Gaming Easter Egg

Subnautica Neebs Gaming Easter Egg

Subnautica has been a favorite among YouTubers since its original early access release in 2014. One channel known as Neebs Gaming would make humorous videos in the early and beta stages of the game which would feature storylines of their own making. For the official release, the developers had members of the channel voice a couple of characters that the player hears over the radio. They can be heard arguing over what kind of sandwich they'd like their coworker to get for them at the deli.
