Subnautica is an underwater survival game that takes players across the vast depths of the ocean. Surviving in the wilderness is one thing, but surviving out in the sea adds a new dimension. Keeping all the gear and vehicles in working order can be a full-time job and things like batteries and aerogel will always be needed. In Subnautica, venturing out into the crushing blue void of the ocean to find something like "aerogel" can be a little tricky in terms of knowing what resources to find.

The first thing that players will need to establish over at seabase is the "fabricator." This will be the main appliance that will craft all needed materials during the game. It will be found inside Lifepod 5 at the beginning of the campaign. Later on, players can build an additional fabricator inside the Cyclops or a seabase module. This can only be done if a player has a "Habitat Builder" in their inventory. This device is used to construct additional appliances within a base or vehicle using raw materials.

Once a fabricator is ready to go, players can build whatever they need through the use of raw materials. While playing Subnautica, players will eventually reach the point that they will need high-end construction gear to further explore the map. One vital component to make this type of gear is through the use of aerogel. In order to make some players will need:

  • Gel Sacks
  • Rubies

Gel sacks can usually be found nesting on walls inside caves. Players can collect them by using a knife and if desired, building an "exterior growbed." If players find themselves growing tired of constantly hunting for gel sacks out in the map, then establishing an exterior growbed will be a good idea. A growbed can be found on the floating island, Degasi seabase, and in the observatory within the secondary Degasi seabase. They can be collected by simply scanning them.

Rubies can be collected by going out in very specific places around the map in Subnautica. They're usually found laying around the Sea Treader's Tunnel Caves and the Lost River. Another place to find rubies is throughout the Grand Reef. This can be found on the Southern end of The Crater and it's rich with resources including rubies. If players have a hard time finding it, using the floating island as a hint will suffice. It's right underneath it and players will need to swim straight down to get to it.

Subnautica is available on Nintendo Switch, Macintosh operating systems, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
