It's been a long time since the series has been around, but soon the classic Sega Genesis beat 'em up Streets of Rage will be returning with Streets of Rage 4. Thanks to footage from Gamescom 2019, audiences now have a nice long look at the game in action. There is over seven minutes of gameplay to take in, which features one of the new playable characters.

There has been at least one trailer already that shows off segments of gameplay, but this latest video provides the longest, rawest look yet. Anyone who has played a previous title in the series will experience a bit of déjà vu. The sequel, as it is shown here, plays in a very similar way. The video contains a few familiar sound effects and at least one music track from the original trilogy. Axel, one of the classic characters, still uses many of the same moves and there are even a few returning enemies, such as Shiva, who is the boss of the stage.

Not everything is the same, though. There is a whole new art style and sharper graphics, a new story that takes place 10 years after the last game, and a new character, Cherry, who teams up with Axel in this early gameplay video. Cherry is a guitar-wielding, badass rocker who uses her axe to brawl. She can also play the guitar to deal damage. Along with Blaze, who is also a returning fighter, there are now three playable characters revealed so far. However, some of the various promotional material for the game suggests there is at least one more new character that hasn't been seen yet.

The last game in the series debuted on the Sega Genesis, so the music is another noticeable change in the sequel. Streets of Rage is known for having very energetic techno soundtracks composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro. The good news is he has returned to work on the sequel, but that will be obvious to anyone who hears the new tracks in the gameplay video. It may not sound like Genesis music, but it still sounds like a Streets game.

The original series can still be played today, even without an old school console. The Sega Genesis Mini has a wide selection of games, sporting an impressive lineup of 42 titles, which includes Streets of Rage 2. Unfortunately, that is the only one that is playable. The rest are absent for some reason, though that is, arguably, the best in the series thus far. For the full original trilogy, the SEGA Genesis Collection is the way to go.

Another classic beat 'em up from long ago also had a presence at Gamescom this year. At the event, Battletoads presented a gameplay video as well. For the sequel, Rash, Zitz, and Pimple, the three amphibious brothers, are returning for another round of wacky, side-scrolling action, this time with three-player couch co-op. No telling at this point if the game will match the insane level of difficulty the original is known for.

Streets of Rage 4 is currently in development for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
