The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection remains on-track for release later in May, a celebration of 30 years of gaming's most iconic fighting game. But Capcom isn't content with just releasing a new product. It knows that the heart of Street Fighter lies in its community and the competitions that bring them together. That's why Capcom's has now also announced the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series, to follow the Anniversary Collection's release.

Three major tournaments will make up the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series, each for a different title included within the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. Nostalgic Street Fighter fans will be happy to hear that the three featured games will be Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and none other than Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.

Here are the upcoming Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series events and dates:

  • Street Fighter 2 Turbo 'Grand Master Challenge' - CEO 2018, June 29 - July 1
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 'Dramatic Battle' - SoCal Regionals 2018, Sept. 14 - Sept. 16
  • Street Fighter 3: Third Strike 'Fight for the Future' - Canada Cup, Oct. 26 - Oct. 28

Each individual tournament will feature a prize pool of $7000 contributed by Capcom, with the winner 's prize being $3000.

The onset of the Capcom produced Capcom Pro Tour, which has so far remained focused on a singular game in Street Fighter 4 and then Street Fighter 5, has had the perhaps unforeseen consequence of emptying the competitive circuit of other Capcom titles. There's only so much time and money available within the scene. But that doesn't mean that there aren't communities still playing these classic Street Fighter titles, nor that there isn't demand for their return to competition.

Capcom's solution is impressive. Three individual tournaments for the three most popular games within the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection allows each title to shine, while multiple tournaments or a seasonal tour would likely be overdoing it. Street Fighter 5 remains the star of the show, but each 30th Anniversary tournament still feels special. Plus, if the tournaments prove successful Capcom can make them annual events.

For official details on each tournament head over to Capcom's official website, which includes information on how to participate as well as individual tournament rules. For example, Akuma will be banned from the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo tournament because he's incredibly strong. Otherwise, look forward to some awesome classic competitive Street Fighter tournament action in the months to come.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection releases in May for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
