Many will fondly remember Street Fighter 2 as perhaps one of the greatest fighting games in history. Breaking onto the scene in 1991, Capcom are now celebrating the 2-D beat 'em up's thirtieth anniversary this month and have been asking fans on Twitter who their favorite character was.

Thirty years ago, Street Fighter 2 hit arcades and home consoles and has since become a worldwide success selling around 6.3 million copies since its release. With such characters as Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile and M. Bison, the franchise has gone down as a stalwart example of old-school gaming, besting other fighting game franchises like Mortal Kombat and Virtua Fighter.

Street Fighter 2 ultimately became the blueprint for modern fighting games, and despite the franchise not being what it once was, there are still plenty of gamers who will think back to more innocent times sinking a lot of coins into arcade machines. It's an important part of gaming history and people are still discovering things about Street Fighter that have evaded fans for decades.

In 1994, there was even a movie adaptation of Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia (AKA Mr. Gomez Adams himself). Sadly, it was not received well which is probably not too surprising seeing as a lot of video game adaptations have struggled to capture the attention of movie goers. That being said, Street Fighter 2 is arguably the best of the series, especially given that there were so many iterations of it, and the fact that it celebrates thirty years is a testament to the game's impact on the community.
