Streamlabs, a popular app used by livestreamers on Twitch and Mixer, launched a macOS client in open beta today. The service has been available for Windows since 2014, but the Mac version will bring the same set of features to Apple's suite of computers.

Based partially on the open-source OBS streaming platform, Streamlabs has grown popular among internet personalities for combining professional-level streaming tools with a simple interface. The Windows version has over 20 million users, including some of Twitch's most prominent talent like Pokimane.

Capabilities included in the Mac and Windows versions of the app include overlays and widgets for streamers to include in their video feeds, optimized video encoding to reduce CPU usage, and an integrated chat window and moderation tools for hosts to interact with their audiences. Streamlabs supports streaming on Twitch, Mixer, YouTube and Facebook.

Mac owners hoping to get into the streaming game have a strong new offering to look forward to using. The Windows version of the app will probably remain the more popular choice, but with livestreaming growing in popularity as most are kept inside during the global COVID-19 pandemic, the new client is likely to reach a decent audience.

Streamlabs shares much of its capabilities with OBS Studio, the app it's based on, but the biggest differences lie in the apps' user interfaces and more specific features, like donation support. With the Mac livestreaming software options being limited largely to OBS and a few other little-known choices until now, OBS's arrival on the platform is welcome, even if gaming on macOS isn't very popular.
