Stray has now been played by millions of people all over the world, at least according to some recently released data from Sony. This follows on the heels of being nominated for the main prize at the 2022 Game Awards and winning both the Best Indie and Best Debut Indie categories.

As is often the case these days, exact sales figures for Stray are not publically available, though there is plenty of evidence that points to the game being commercially successful. Shortly after the game's launch, Stray broke publisher Annapurna Interactive’s record for concurrent players on Steam. Now, thanks to this year's PlayStation Wrap-Up, it's possible to get an even better idea of just how many people have played the game.

For those unaware, the PlayStation Wrap-Up allows players to see stats relating to all of the games that they played this year. It also provides miscellaneous information about some of the year's biggest titles, which, in the 2022 edition, includes Stray. According to the accompanying infographic in the PS Plus section of the site, 635 thousand basketballs have been dunked in-game, which points to a total player count in the millions.

Dunking a basketball in Stray is somewhat significant, as doing so will unlock one of the game's many trophies. According to the PlayStation app, only 14.2% of players have unlocked the Boom Chat Kalaka trophy in Stray. Combining these two pieces of information reveals that as many as 4,471,831 have played Stray on PlayStation, making it one of the most-played indie games of the past few years.

Stats about Stray showing the potential player count

It's worth noting that this number does not include PC players, nor does it equate to direct sales on PlayStation, as Stray is available for free to PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers. It's also possible that some players may have dunked the basketball multiple times, though as there's no real benefit to doing so, this seems a little unlikely, assuming the game even tracks additional dunks once the trophy has been unlocked.

This isn't the first time that one of Sony's end-of-year initiatives has allowed people to work out player counts for PlayStation games. Four years ago, Sony launched My PS4 Life, which allowed players to see their rarest trophy and the exact number of people who had unlocked it. By cross-referencing this number with the percentage of people who had unlocked the trophy, players could work out just how many people had played the game. This led to the creation of sites like Gamstat, which provided accurate player counts for pretty much every PS4 game released before December 2018.

Stray is available on PS4, PS5, and PC.
