As the gaming industry has evolved, so has the need for titles to feature amazing graphics, compelling gameplay loops, and brilliant stories that are a treat to witness from start to end. The latter is an area where video games have evolved quite a bit, with the end result being that certain video games have become well-known for the incredible stories that will send fans in for a loop with just how amazing their narratives really are.

This is especially true in the case of plot twists, with some games being pretty great when it comes to these swerves that will take players completely off guard. However, there are times when the plot twists in certain games can be pretty strange for many reasons, with the most notable examples in this regard mentioned below.

8 The Entire Game Was A Dream (Super Mario Bros. 2)

Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't really a game that's heavy in the story department. Rather, it's the tight platforming that players have come to expect from these games that makes this sequel so beloved in the eyes of many.

However, the ending of this game felt completely unexpected. After beating the final boss, a shot pans to Mario dreaming about the events of the game, which cheapens the overall experience.

7 Almost All The Party Members Being From The Same Orphanage (Final Fantasy 8)

Haste in Final Fantasy 8

The Final Fantasy series is notable for having stories with massive scopes that can be quite mind-boggling in their own right. So, when these games try and incorporate plot twists, the results can be pretty mixed.

The plot twist from Final Fantasy 8 which was reviled by many talked about the memory loss that everyone in the game experienced after using Guardian Forces for so long. This is why none of them remember that, aside from Rinoa, everyone was originally from the same orphanage as well!

6 Ellie Letting Abby Live (The Last Of Us Part 2)

The entirety of The Last of Us Part 2 is littered with confusing statements about revenge being a useless act despite the act of killing being glorified quite a bit in the game. So, when players finally got their hands on Abby, everyone expected Ellie to dish out a killing blow.

However, that's not the case, and Ellie decides to let Abby go despite killing off almost all of her friends and hunting them down like an animal. The Last of Us Part 2 has one of the most confusing narratives in a video game, and this moment definitely personifies it.

5 Raiden Being The Actual Protagonist (Metal Gear Solid 2)

Metal Gear Solid 2 Raiden

Pretty much everyone expected to play as Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2. However, fans were thrown in for a loop when Solid Snake was shelved in favor of Raiden, who became the protagonist of the game.

At the time, this twist drew the ire of many fans who hated the idea of playing as someone else. Over time, the reception to this bold move has been more positive, although some players still find this twist to be so bad that Metal Gear Solid 2 ranks as one of the worse games in the series for them.

4 The Sole Survivor's Son Being The Leader Of The Institute (Fallout 4)

Throughout the entire game, the Sole Survivor searches far and wide in a bid to try and locate his lost son. After a long journey where he killed multiple enemies from the Institute, the Sole Survivor suddenly finds Shaun... only for the truth to be something completely wild.

It turns out that the Sole Survivor was cryogenically frozen for longer than he expected, with Shaun being an old man almost on his deathbed who wants his father to take over as the leader of the Institute. This reveal would've made complete sense... had the Institute not been hard at work trying to kill its potential leader time and time again!

3 Hojo Being Sephiroth's Father (Final Fantasy 7)

Professor Hojo - Facts about Shinra

Final Fantasy 7 was a landmark game for SquareSoft, establishing them as one of the biggest and most celebrated developers of JRPGs during the golden years of this genre. Fans absolutely loved the story of Final Fantasy 7, with Aerith's death being absolutely heartbreaking.

However, the game has another plot twist that most fans find to be rather odd, with it being revealed later on that Hojo was actually Sephiroth's father. The fact that he apparently had this child with the woman who used to be Vincent's fiance made this side plot even more convoluted for absolutely no reason.

2 Alice Being An Android All Along (Detroit: Become Human)

Kara and Alice run from soldiers

David Cage games have a habit of sporting genuinely brain-melting plot twists that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Such was the case with Detroit: Become Human, where Kara finds out that the child she was protecting was an android all along.

This twist would've made more sense had Alice not been an artificial model that more people could get in the game. The fact that Kara somehow missed out on all the advertising promoting this child was genuinely hard to fathom.

1 Scott Shelby Being The Origami Killer (Heavy Rain)

Scott Shelby in Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is perhaps the best Quantic Dream title out there. However, even this compelling murder mystery is full to the brim with many issues, with the majority of them coming to light when the identity of the Origami Killer is revealed.

It turns out that the Origami Killer is Scott Shelby, one of the characters that players were controlling. This brings up many plot holes especially when it comes to the Manfred chapter, which becomes completely nonsensical because of this twist.
