Stranger Things star David Harbour provided new updates on the long-awaited fourth season of the hit Netflix show. At this time, it is unclear when Stranger Things 4 will premiere on the streaming platform.
Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of the widely popular series since season 3 dropped in the summer of 2019. Despite being presumed dead after defeating the Russian Terminator, a season four teaser revealed that Harbour’s Jim Hopper is alive and imprisoned in Russia.
Stranger Things has not only attracted record viewership on Netflix, but it has also received 39 Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Netflix reported that over 64 million households watched Stranger Things 3 within the first four weeks of its release. While details on the upcoming season have been kept under wraps, Harbour told Collider that the newest season doesn’t take place in Hawkins anymore and is bigger in scope. “We’re introducing new stuff, but we’re also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction to make it have a clear, clean specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can’t really talk about,” said the Tony and Emmy-nominated actor. The Duffer Brothers have previously asserted that the fourth season of Stranger Things won’t be the show’s last.
Before noting that Stranger Things season 4 is a big, beautiful season that features some surprises fans know nothing about, Harbour noted that Stranger Things season four is his favorite because it shows the stubborn Hopper at his most vulnerable. “He gets to have a rebirth from what he had become, and we’d always sort of planned this almost resurrection of you have Gandalf dies, Gandalf the Grey re-emerge, and I’m really interested in this resurgence of him,” said the actor, while adding, “we get to explore a lot of threads in his life that have merely been hinted at that we get to see a lot more of.” Of course, Gandalf is the famous wizard who thrusts Frodo Baggins and company on the journey that would be the focus of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings novels. The role of Gandalf was played by Sir Ian McKellen in Peter Jackson's feature film adaptation of the trilogy.
This July, Harbour can be seen alongside Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and Scarlett Johansson in Cate Shortland’s Black Widow. The Phase 4 Marvel Studios film centers on Natasha Romanoff’s family and history as a Russian spy and takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Furthermore, Black Widow will be released simultaneously in theatres and on Disney Plus and is one of four Marvel Studios films that's scheduled to premiere this year.
Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian serves as a father figure to Johansson’s Romanoff and Pugh’s Belova and is the Soviet equivalent of Captain America. Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Shostakov first appeared in 1967’s The Avengers #43. The character was previously featured in the animated series Avengers Assemble and the anime Marvel Future Avengers.
