Despite the immense popularity of the Final Fantasy franchise, many players have never seen Final Fantasy 1 to completion. For this reason, many of the elements within the upcoming soulslike Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin may seem new to players. Knowing that it draws inspiration from the game that started it all, there is some confusion about whether or not this new title is some kind of remaster, remake, or if it is an entirely new game altogether.

To put it as plainly as possible, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is not a remake of the original Final Fantasy. It is true that it heavily draws inspiration from that title, including characters and story beats from the original game, but it is definitely different enough to classify as its own game. Rather than call it a remake, players should consider Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin as another interpretation of the original Final Fantasy story.

While it may not be a direct remake of the original game, there are still a lot of callbacks to Final Fantasy 1 that will certainly put a smile on the face of veterans. Team Ninja went so far as to choose enemies for Final Fantasy Origin's incarnation of the Shrine of Chaos that inhabited the area in the original game. Goblins were found outside the temple and around the area of Cornelia, and players would encounter Skeletons, Wolves, and the like inside the Shrine of Chaos. There are still some liberties taken, however, as Bombs, Griffons, and Cactuars were not present here originally.

Final Fantasy 1 VS Final Fantasy Origin

Square Enix describes the game as "a bold new vision for Final Fantasy," and there is honestly still a lot that players don't know about this title. It's possible that it will retread the story of Final Fantasy 1 faithfully, taking players to all of the same locations and having them face off against the Four Fiends but with these new Warriors of Light and an updated gameplay system. On the other hand, it's still entirely possible that the story could go off the rails early on. Some are speculating that this is actually a prequel to Final Fantasy 1, while others think it may be some kind of what-if scenario instead.

Players wanting to re-experience the story of Final Fantasy 1 should look to the upcoming Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, as this features the first six mainline Final Fantasy games remastered and bundled together for mobile and PC. Final Fantasy Origin will instead offer a fresh new take on the original game.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin releases on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in 2022.
