The newly announced Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin certainly had an interesting reveal, to say the least. While rumors of a Souls-inspired reimagining of the first Final Fantasy circulated shortly before its unveiling, there was little indication of what the game's style or tone would be. Not knowing what to expect, those hoping for a return to the aesthetic and story of the original Final Fantasy were surely shaken when the curtain was finally pulled back on the chaotic Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

The new Warriors of Light appear to be a far cry from the original game's heroes; the apparent leader, Jack, is dressed like he's ready to hit the club. But make no mistake, this trio exhibits an undying devotion to the mission of killing Chaos — the final boss of the original Final Fantasy. In fact, Jack is so dedicated to the cause, that he reminds those watching the trailer about it multiple times, just in case the message wasn't quite clear at first.

Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Trailer - "Kill Chaos" Count

The first utterance of the Warriors of Light's goal is heard before any of them have even been introduced. As the group opens a doorway leading towards Chaos' castle, Jack proclaims "I'm here to kill Chaos. That's my mission." Not even 30 seconds later, the Chaos-Killer-To-Be exclaims: "I only know one thing: I want to kill Chaos."

But rather than stop there, the new Final Fantasy protagonist elaborates on his desire to bring an end to Chaos. Jack refuses to classify his pursuit to take Chaos' life as him acting out on a dream or hope of his. Rather, he appears to exhibit a primal appetite for violence that can only be satisfied by killing Chaos. Barely 20 seconds later, the trio ends up at the Shrine of Chaos, where the leading man reaffirms his commitment to hunting him down.

However, it's worth noting that despite Final Fantasy Origin's hero expositing how badly he wants to kill Chaos, the phrase "kill Chaos" or any applicable variants aren't actually spoken in the two instances described above. Unfortunately, this means that Jack's words, despite carrying the same intent as the oft-repeated phrase, won't factor into the "Kill Chaos" count, but they are worth bringing up as honorable mentions.

Before long, the crew finds themselves in the throne room of Garland, the main antagonist from Final Fantasy 1Garland inquires as to who the three men standing before his throne are. "We're here to kill Chaos," answers Jack. It's at this point where Garland reveals a twist of fate: he plans to become Chaos.

Jack, being the strong-willed warrior that he is remarks "Chaos," before appropriately trying to kill him. After getting Garland on the ropes, the protagonist grabs him by the throat and delivers a strong right hand to Garland's helmeted face while proclaiming "I'll crush you!" However, despite the strong effort, once again, the phrase is never spoken in full. That being said, the Warriors of Light deserve at least a bit of recognition for showing that their bite matches their bark. Soon after, the trailer comes to an end, as does the "Kill Chaos" tally.

Within the span of roughly two minutes, the phrase "Kill Chaos" is only uttered verbatim three times. However, it's worth noting the action is alluded to twice by the game's lead, who also attempts to act on it towards the end of the trailer. If there's one key takeaway to be gathered from all of this violent rhetoric and behavior, it's that Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin's protagonists, for whatever reason, really love talking about killing Chaos, so much so that their esteemed leader just can't shut up about it.

If the reveal trailer is any indication, that strong desire of theirs is sure to be something that Final Fantasy's latest leading man, Jack, will be quick to remind players of throughout his chaotic journey when the game launches next year.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is set to release in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
