Stephen Amell will reprise his role as Oliver Queen, a.k.a Green Arrow, in the final season of Grant Gustin's The Flash.

The CW's The Flash, the spinoff of Arrow, which began what fans call the Arrowverse and what Hollywood-types call the only viable DC universe done in live-action to date, is, like all good things, coming to its inevitable end. And as it does, it will see Amell, the man who started it all as Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow himself, return to say goodbye.

The CW announced Amell is reprising his role as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in The Flash season 9, episode 9. The former Arrow star joins The Flash's final season with other returning veterans from the Arrowverse, including David Ramsey as John Diggle, Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West/Kid Flash, and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Bloodwork. Amell's Arrow saw Gustin's Barry Allen (a.k.a. The Flash) appear in season 2 where Allen wants to find out what superhuman killed his mother. From there, Gustin got his own spinoff as his titular character and the rest, as they say, was Arrowverse history.

“As soon as our final season was announced, we knew we wanted Stephen to come back and reprise his iconic role as Oliver Queen," said executive producer Eric Wallace said in a statement. "After all, it was Oliver who originally launched Barry Allen on his heroic path. That’s why everyone on Team Flash felt so strongly that it was important to create a full-circle moment with Oliver’s return in the final season of The Flash.” He added that they created an emotional epic of an episode with all the thrills, chill, and tears fans could expect as they see these two DC titans team up to save the world once again.

So far, Amell has made eight appearances in The Flash as Oliver Queen, and this would add another to that number. The Flash is ending its run, joining many other Arrowverse series that have seen their heydays come and go, but the universe is far from over. Superman and Lois is still going strong, and Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti is still behind the upcoming Green Lantern series. Like any good race, for Barry Allen and The Flash, it’s finally over.

The Flash season 9 premieres on February 8, 2023, on The CW.
