It's been over five years now since the original release of Stellaris, the 4X grand strategy title from Paradox Interactive. In Stellaris, players guide an alien civilization from spaceflight to mastery of the galaxy, facing other cultures, wormholes, and other types of cosmic threats along the way.

The most dangerous enemies in Stellaris are the Guardians, colossal spaceborne monstrosities who can take entire late-game battlefleets to destroy. The Voidspawn is one of the deadliest among these creatures, but with a well-designed or overwhelming fleet, it can be defeated. Here's how players can take on the Voidspawn and survive.

What Is The Voidspawn In Stellaris?

Unlike many of the Guardians added in the Distant Stars Stellaris DLC, the Voidspawn doesn't spawn at the start of the game. Instead, it begins hidden within a size 20 Desert, Arid, or Savannah world orbiting a G-class Star. A civilization that colonizes the planet will receive a notification a year later that the world has a pulse. Roughly 9 months afterwards, either the pulse will stop or the planet will hatch into a Voidspawn.

The infant Voidspawn doesn't have a Shield, but makes up for it with huge amounts of Armor and Hull. It also uses Guided weapons exclusively, allowing it to deal terrifying amounts of damage that ignores Shields. Any player that defeats the Voidspawn will earn a large amount of Unity, as well as a Stellaris Special Project to research the egg-planet. This eventually leads to the Gargantuan Evolution Tech, which grants +5% Energy Credits from Jobs.

Building A Fleet To Destroy The Voidspawn In Stellaris

The Voidspawn's complete lack of Shields make Energy weapons the ideal choice to defeat it, with Plasma Launchers, Lasers, Lances, and Particle Launchers being among the best choices. Penetrating weapons like Disruptors can also be fairly effective, as well as Explosive weapons and Strike Craft. The worst kind of weapons for an aspiring grand strategist to take against the Voidspawn are Kinetic and Anti-Shield.

In terms of defense, the best way to mitigate the Voidspawn's Guided weapons in Stellaris is through Point-Defense systems and heavy Armor. Picket Corvettes and Destroyers equipped with Point-Defense should fan out in a screen ahead of larger ships, where their fast-firing lasers will be able to destroy incoming projectiles launched by the Voidspawn. Given that the Guardian fires a relatively low amount of high-damage projectiles, using Corvettes as a screen can allow the small, low-cost ships to absorb stray hits that might destroy Cruisers or Battleships.

Using these tactics and weapons, players should be able to defeat the Voidspawn with a fleet power of around 20K. Without a specialized fleet, players will need 40-50K in order to stand a good chance of slaying the Guardian.

Stellaris is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
