Steel Battalion was the game that no one played but everyone knew about. It was so well known because of its controller; a many buttoned behemoth that looked like it took a degree in aviation to learn to operate. Now, the game’s sequel, titled Steel Battalion Heavy Armor looks to attach itself to an entirely different controller tech — one without buttons.

Yes, you read that right Ranters. Heavy Armor, sequel to the game with the most complex controller since the original Xbox controller, has gone the way of Kinect. Instead of operating your juggernaut of a mech by way of a complex series of joystick gestures and switches, you will be operating it with your body.

Capcom’s Keiji Inafune is excited to be working with the Kinect technology because of its ability to deliver what he describes as a one of a kind experience.

“With Kinect’s ability to track your joints and movements and understand where the player is in 3D space and the development expertise of From Software in partnership with Capcom’s own personnel, we are confident of delivering a truly immersive experience for Xbox 360 gamers.”

Kinect utilization aside, Heavy Armor looks to be delivering some gritty military action as players are thrown into the thick of it in some sort of beach storming mission. Here’s Capcom’s description of the game:

Set in 2082, Steel Battalion Heavy Armor depicts a world devoid of computers, where war is waged with rudimentary weapons as new superpowers struggle for dominance. In a twist of fate, the US army has been forced to begin major landing operations on what was once its own soil. In this low-tech era there is one weapon class that will determine the course of the war — the Vertical Tank. VTs are guaranteed to instill fear in enemy forces when they burst onto the battlefield; but they are nothing without the crews who man them. Lacking computer aided weapon and piloting systems; these brave men and women must now rely on skill, intuition and each other to ensure victory.

Whether you prefer buttons or not, Capcom’s decision to adapt their game to the Kinect tech should bring the type of game motion control fans have been waiting for.
