The newest SteamWorld game has officially been revealed. Developer Image & Form has created multiple games in the SteamWorld franchise, including SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Heist, and SteamWorld Tower Defense. After sharing that a new SteamWorld game was in the works last year, publisher Thunderful Games has just released a new teaser trailer for the latest entry into the series: SteamWorld Headhunter.

SteamWorld Headhunter may be the most ambitious game in the franchise yet. Thus far, the SteamWorld games have all fallen under a similar aesthetic. The gameplay and genre of each title have varied drastically, however. There have been platform Metroidvanias, a turn-based tactics game, a deck-building RPG, and more. SteamWorld Headhunter is a third-person co-op action-adventure, adding to a series that already has some of the best western-themed titles in gaming.

The simple but intriguing teaser trailer pits two Steambots against one another, facing off in what appears to be an old fashioned western-style fast draw duel. One of the bots appears to be victorious, but there is a twist at the end of the video. The colorful steampunk vibe is emanating from the short video, as is a level of charm that the series has been known for. And thus, the stage is set for SteamWorld Headhunter, and publisher Thunderful Games said it will share more information in the near future.

One of the first things that fans may notice when viewing the teaser trailer of SteamWorld Headhunter is the perspective and graphical style. The SteamWorld games have historically been 2D and used a distinct art style. While the teaser trailer for SteamWorld Headhunter maintains the rustic, gritty, vibrant, and western feel of the franchise, it looks to have changed to a 3D art style and a third-person perspective. This perhaps should not be a massive surprise, as developer Image & Form has progressed to some more advanced visuals with the likes of The Gunk headed to Xbox Game Pass in the near future. But it will be a shift for SteamWorld.

So far, the video and announcement has been met with general applause. Fans seem excited to see the SteamWorld franchise evolve into a new perspective with new opportunities for gameplay. While the series has always altered in genre--which keeps it infinitely fresh--the jump to 3D in terms of visuals and gameplay will be the biggest shift yet. In some ways, the old-school 2D and indie feeling of the previous SteamWorld games may be preferred by some fans, but if SteamWorld Headhunter is a hit all will be forgiven. With The Gunk being released next month, players could even get a small taste of what the developer has been up to and what a 3D SteamWorld game could feel like.

SteamWorld Headhunter is currently in development.
