Sega and Creative Assembly are feeling particularly generous, given the challenging times we're living in. To help gamers stave off boredom while stuck at home, Sega's going to give away free copies of Total War: Shogun 2 for free on Steam. Steam users just need to download Shogun 2 to have it permanently added to their libraries, though it isn't free quite yet.

Total War: Shogun 2 is somewhat of an older Creative Assembly game, having been released in 2011. It still stands out as one of the Total War franchise's most popular given the Japanese setting. It even led to a spin-off game named Total War Battles: Shogun on iOS. For those curious about the Total War franchise, it's a great opportunity to get acquainted.

In order to pick up Total War: Shogun 2, Steam users will just have to search for it like normal between the dates of April 27 and May 4. During this time, Sega will be holding a sale on the Total War franchise, outside of Three Kingdoms and Rome. New Shogun 2 owners can even purchase some of the game's DLC at a discounted price.

Some are speculating that there's something more going on beyond the announcement. A rumored leak from this past week pointed toward a special partnership between Sega and Xbox that would be revealed in June. Perhaps Sega is building up Total War now in part because it's related, or perhaps it's just a sale for the sake of having a sale.

Total War: Shogun 2 is available now on PC.
