Steam users can claim Desktop Dungeons completely free of charge as long as they do so by Tuesday, April 25 at 11:00am CT. PC gamers are treated to free games on a regular basis across most all digital distribution platforms. Anyone that is diligent about claiming the freebies whenever they become available should have no problem amassing a sizable collection of PC games without spending a dime.
The Epic Games Store gives away free games every week, while GOG gives away free games sometimes as well, typically to promote a sale or promotion. PC gamers can claim free Steam games a lot of the time as well, with Steam giving away Battlestar Galactica Deadlock for free earlier in April. Now Steam users have another free game to claim in April 2023 in the form of the previously mentioned Desktop Dungeons.
Steam users have until April 25 to claim Desktop Dungeons for free, at which point it will revert to its usual price. Desktop Dungeons earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its original release and has a respectable 82 overall rating according to review aggregate site Metacritic. Desktop Dungeons is being made free as a way to promote the newly-released Desktop Dungeons: Rewind, which is a full-blown remake of the game.
PC gamers can't get Desktop Dungeons: Rewind for free, but it should be noted that the new game is currently available at a discounted price. Just as Steam users have until April 25 to claim Desktop Dungeons for free, they also have until April 25 to buy Desktop Dungeons: Rewind at a discount. Until that day comes, anyone interested can buy Desktop Dungeons: Rewind for 15% off, bringing it down to $16.99 from its usual asking price of $19.99. There aren't many professional reviews for Desktop Dungeons: Rewind to compare its reception to the original game, but it does have "Very Positive" Steam ratings at the time of this writing. For comparison's sake, the original Desktop Dungeons also has "Very Positive" Steam reviews, though the more recent scores are ranked as "Mostly Positive" instead.
Even if one misses out on their chance to claim Desktop Dungeons for free, chances are there will be new free games to claim on Steam in the very near future. PC gamers in general can also look forward to the next batch of Epic Games Store free games, with a new set of freebies added to that particular digital distribution platform every Thursday at 10:00am CT.
