Those who own or have at least played the Steam Deck can attest to whether or not it's currently living up to its hype. Originally considered to be Valve's answer to the Nintendo Switch, it's been touted to be more like a mobile PC, with the ability to install a different operating system and even program games on it. At its core, however, the Steam Deck is a gaming machine, which is pretty much the reason people are buying it. Luckily, there are thousands of titles that are now compatible with the device.

According to a report from GamingOnLinux, it seems as though the Steam Deck can now play more than 4,000 games. At the time of writing, 1,867 have been verified, while 2,140 are considered playable, totaling 4,007 in all. The report also says that 1,600 titles are "unsupported." However, this doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't compatible with the Deck. It's more likely that they have yet to be fully tested for their compatibility, and more games will no doubt be added to the list as time goes on.

It wasn't that long ago that the Steam Deck had 2,500 compatible games, which is already a good amount, but the growing number shows that progress is being made all the time. For those who are curious, when a game is "playable," that basically means it should run on the Deck but there may be some glitches. Titles that are "verified" should run perfectly without any issues. Valve has a vested interest in making sure its mobile device can play as many games as possible, so it makes sense that the number that are compatible is on the rise.

However, it's by no means a perfect machine, and there has been a little bit of controversy lately. Last month, it was reported that some Steam Deck models may have been downgraded, particularly the 256 GB and 512 GB variants. Those waiting on theirs may be interested to know that the one they receive may have a PCIe 3 x2 SSD instead of the PCIe 3 x4 type. However, the company insists that this won't affect game performance.

The Steam Deck is proving to be a significant portable gaming system. Valve has a shaky past when it comes to hardware, such as the Steam Link or Steam Controller, but it seems that Gabe Newell and his team have finally managed to branch out into other areas that aren't software related.
