Since the advent of the Internet, many video game companies have started opting to provide announcements regarding its products directly to the consumer via live streams, and it looks as if Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is set to get in on the action. Today, SIE has announced a new streaming series called "State of Play", which will offer up new PS4 and PlayStation VR software updates and announcements.

According to Sony, the first episode of State of Play will debut on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 2:00 PM PT, and PlayStation fans should expect to receive information in the form of new trailers, new game announcements, and new gameplay footage for the PS4 and PS VR platforms. The company will be live streaming the first State of Play episode worldwide via Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, and it will provide a video-on-demand (VOD) version shortly after the episode airs.

As previously mentioned, Sony isn't the first video game company to use live streaming as a means to disseminate announcements about what people should expect to see in the future. As many will likely be quick to point out, Nintendo has been well-known to utilize this method by giving video game fans information for its platforms by way of various Nintendo Directs.

Not too long ago, Sony not only decided to not hold its annual PlayStation Experience showcase in 2018, but also announced it will be skipping E3 2019 come June. With this being the case, it's quite possible that SIE decides to forego traditional trade shows and expos in the future in favor of State of Play live streams. In fact, the company stated this live stream model "will return throughout the year with more updates and announcements".

All things considered, it will be interesting to see what Sony offers up for its first State of Play episode, as there are quite a few forthcoming games that PlayStation fans have been eager learn more about since they were originally revealed. For instance, next week's live stream showcase could feature the likes of Dreams, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us: Part 2, or even the highly enigmatic Death Stranding. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer to find out what SIE has planned.

Sony's first State of Play episode will stream live on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET on March 25, 2019.
