Taking inspiration from Nintendo and its Nintendo Direct presentations, Sony has started its own game news series called State of Play. The first State of Play included the reveal of a new Iron Man VR game, and the May 9th State of Play event is expected to bring news on the MediEvil remake as well as some other games. Sony has been mostly secretive about what to expect from the State of Play May 9th stream, but a new rumor making the rounds suggests that it will have something Final Fantasy-related to show.

The rumor started on May 7th, when Square Enix executive Shinji Hashimoto tweeted about the State of Play May 9th event. Translated, Hashimoto's tweet says, "Oh, it has come," which has led some to believe that he's doing more than just helping Sony promote its State of Play stream.

Shortly after Hashimoto's tweet, the official Final Fantasy Twitter account added fuel to the fire with two seemingly random tweets about Chocobos. One tweet simply showed Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 with a Chocobo, whereas the other was a poll about Chocobos. It's possible that these tweets are completely unrelated, but it has led to some speculation that a new Chocobo-themed Final Fantasy game will be announced at the State of Play May 9th event.

Square Enix has released a number of Final Fantasy Chocobo spinoffs in the past, so it's not out of the question that it has another one in development for PS4. In fact, it may be that this announcement has something to do with DLC for the recently-released Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon remaster.

Alternatively, more optimistic people are hoping that this is a tease for something regarding the long-gestating Final Fantasy 7 remake. We haven't seen much of the Final Fantasy 7 remake over the years, and at this point, it seems likely that its development is going to shift from PS4 to PS5. However, maybe Square Enix's tweets are a tease that we'll an updated look at Chocobos as they appear in the FF7 remake during State of Play.

It's possible people are just looking too much into Square Enix's tweets, and Final Fantasy may not be featured in Sony's State of Play May 9th stream at all. With State of Play happening tomorrow, May 9th, at 3:00pm PT, fans won't have to wait too much longer to find out.
