While Thursday's Xbox Games Showcase for the Xbox Series X started with the reveal of Halo Infinite gameplay, the first game announcement of the show was State of Decay 3. Undead Labs is now confirmed to be working on another sequel in its popular open-world zombie survival game franchise.
State of Decay 3 was announced with a short cinematic trailer. No gameplay was shown, unfortunately. The cinematic focused a single character who seemed lost, or perhaps just surviving, in the midst of the snowy wilderness. At the start of the trailer, she's shown scaring off a hungry wolf. At the end of the trailer, a zombie deer is shown eating that same wolf.
While no gameplay was shown, the idea behind the trailer is made clear. Prey becomes predator in State of Decay 3, care of the game franchise's zombie pandemic. And perhaps more meaningful, humanity's place may not be as predator any longer. When even deer become ferocious beasts, it's time to renew expectations.
Other interesting details from the trailer include hints at the return of the franchise's core survival gameplay. Specifically, the woman making camp and crafting arrows from sticks. The return of a State of Decay 2's day and night cycle is also hinted at. Beyond that's, it's tough to make any assumptions.
No release information was provided for State of Decay 3, so the game is presumably going to be a 2021 or later launch. And it'll certainly be coming to PC and Xbox Series X, too. It wasn't even made clear whether State of Decay 3 was an open-world game, though that too can be assumed. Fans will simply have to wait for more information in the months to come.
The one detail about State of Decay 3 that was confirmed, is that the game is coming to Xbox Game Pass at launch on both PC and Xbox Series X. Microsoft is continuing its promise to deliver all of its first-party releases the Game Pass subscribers on launch day going into the Xbox Series X console era.
