During its Gamescom 2021 livestream, Microsoft announced an exciting new update for Undead Labs’ open-world zombie survival game State of Decay 2. It was re-released as State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition in March 2020 as a free upgrade to existing owners, and will now be getting a remastered map as a part of the Homecoming update.

State of Decay 2 launched in 2018 to mixed reviews, but has seen a steady release of new content since then. The Heartland DLC added new story missions and characters, while the Juggernaut Edition overhauled several graphical features, including the lighting. Undead Labs has promised that State of Decay 2 will get continued support despite the announcement of its sequel State of Decay 3, and that has proven to be correct yet again.

Microsoft has confirmed that Trumbull Valley, the original map from the first State of Decay, will now be fully playable as an open-world map in State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition. While Trumbull Valley was playable in the above-mentioned Heartland DLC, players were extremely limited by the restrictions imposed by story missions. After this new update, players will be able to explore areas that weren't previously accessible. The following action-packed trailer mainly consists of zombies being slaughtered in various fashions, before highlighting some of the features that will be a part of the update.

Homecoming adds six new bases, as well as unique weapons and outfits that can only be found in Trumbull Valley. New missions and achievements will also be added to State of Decay 2 as a part of this update. State of Decay 2 optimized for Xbox Series X last year, and fans can now experience 4K/60fps performance, faster load times, and the improved world and shadow detail in the game.

Undead Labs had confirmed that State of Decay 3 was in early pre-production as of last year, so it’s easy to assume that a part of the production team has continued to work on new content for State of Decay 2. Regardless, opening up the original Trumbull Valley and letting fans turn it into their new playground should help pass the time before the release of the next game in the series.

The Homecoming update will launch on September 1, and will be included as a part of Xbox Game Pass. Undead Labs also announced that State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition has surpassed a massive milestone of 10 million players.

State of Decay 2 is now available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
