Microsoft's exclusive title, State of Decay 2, the upcoming open world zombie survival game and follow-up to 2011's State of Decay, released a pair of new screenshots today. The screenshots showcase some of the environments players will be able to explore and scavenge for supplies in, all while trying to survive the zombie hordes that infest the world.

For those unfamiliar with the first game, State of Decay tasks the player with staying alive in an open world that has been overrun by zombies. Players can do this by recruiting and leveling up survivor NPCs, and scrounging for supplies for their homebase. An extra layer of tension was added to the mix, as the game had a permadeath system in place, so once a survivor died, they were gone forever. That meant players could lose a survivor they spent hours leveling up if they weren't careful. The sequel looks to keep the core formula intact, while adding new features like multiplayer.

Undead Labs, the studio developing State of Decay 2, showed off the new screenshots on the game's Twitter page. One screenshot reveals the front porch of a home, with a partially broken front window, which may make it easier to break into the home and scavenge supplies. Unless the glass breaking alerts nearby zombies, which could cause complications. The second one shows a seemingly peaceful cemetery set against a serene backdrop of snowy mountains with a group of windmill power generators behind it.

While the first game was not a mainstream success when it originally released on the Xbox 360, it became somewhat of a sleeper hit that has since built a dedicated fanbase. Those same fans have been eagerly anticipating the sequel, especially with the gameplay trailer shown at last year's E3. While the gameplay reveal was exciting for fans, news also came that the game, which was originally set to release sometime late last year, was delayed until 2018.

While no specific release date has been given, Undead Labs has stated fans should expect the game this spring. The developers have also confirmed the game will include at least three maps at launch, with the possibility of more being added later on down the road.

State of Decay 2 is set to release exclusively for Windows 10 on PC and Xbox One this spring.
