State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs has released a new piece of concept art from the upcoming sequel. The artwork is a slight variation of imagery that we saw in the game's reveal trailer at E3 2016, which was set in a slightly darker take on the same landscape.
"The endless road is a metaphor, promising a new world at the end of the horizon, but of course you never actually get to the end," writes Undead Lab's community manager Sanya Weathers in the blog post accompanying the State of Decay 2 image. "The road always leads to another road, and there’s no escaping yourself at any point along the journey."
In the next paragraph, Weathers reveals that this navel-gazing blurb was simply a gag. The road itself doesn't have a deeper meaning. The image came from tests the studio did on light levels during the production of the reveal trailer.
That said, State of Decay 2 is nearing the end of its long road to release. This piece of artwork is the final installment of a sequence of concept art reveals spanning several weeks. If Undead Labs is done showing off concept materials, it seems likely that we will see more screenshots and in-game footage in the near future.
In December 2016, the studio revealed that State of Decay 2 is set to play a big role in Microsoft's E3 2017 conference. Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain stated that fans would learn the game's release date and what systems it will be available for, which suggests that the zombie-slaying sequel could be a launch title for Project Scorpio.
It's been almost four years since the original State of Decay launched. Over the coming months, we're sure to hear much, much more about its promising sequel.
State of Decay 2 is scheduled to launch in 2017.
