One of the biggest surprise announcements of this past week's Xbox Games Showcase was the reveal of State of Decay 3. The surprise wasn't entirely due to it being such a big announcement, but also because State of Decay 2 is still receiving updates. There were a lot of State of Decay fans and players wondering what the State of Decay 3 announcement meant for State of Decay 2. Luckily, developer Undead Labs has since offered a comment on the matter.

On Twitter, a fan that asked Undead whether it meant State of Decay 2 would stop being supported when State of Decay 3 comes out. Undead Labs responded with an answer that should make all State of Decay fans happy. According to Undead, the team is committed to "supporting and continually improving" State of Decay 2. "We are not done with SoD2," is the full extent of Undead Labs' commitment.

Further, to cement the point, Undead Labs confirms that it has an update coming for State of Decay 2 later in July. Update 19: Riding Shotgun is in the works and Undead Lab has since confirmed a livestream detailing the update on July 29. The stream will go over the upcoming patches notes.

Beyond Update 19, however, State of Decay 2 players will have to find out what Undead Labs has planned. Judging from the Twitter reply, Update 19 won't be the end of State of Decay 2's support. But that doesn't mean State of Decay 2 will be supported forever.

One thing that's especially notable from Undead Labs' reply is that it doesn't address whether support for State of Decay 2 will last up to the release of State of Decay 3 or if it will end when the sequel launches. The implication being that State of Decay 2 support probably won't go that far, and likely won't last anywhere near that long.

State of Decay 3 is likely some time away from release. No gameplay was shown of the new game, so no one should expect it anytime soon. Undead Labs also confirmed recently that State of Decay 3 is in pre-productionState of Decay 2 will maintain Undead's focus at least until the push toward State of Decay 3's launch is approaching.

State of Decay 3 is in development for PC and Xbox Series X.
