After debuting its first season last year, The CW's teenage action series Stargirl added another promising expansion to the DC universe. Gaining an increasing amount of attention, the show quickly become one of The CW's most-watched shows last year. With the announcement of season 2 and the first trailer, fresh photos from the series offer some insight on new characters featured in the upcoming season, including the Justice Society of America.

The photos showcase some potential allies and villains for main character Courtney Whitmore, a.k.a. Stargirl (Brec Bassinger). Some returning characters highlighted in the photos include Sylvester Pemberton/Starman (Joel McHale), Courtney's stepdad Pat (Luke Wilson), and some images of the Justice Society of America (JSA) in and out of costume. The impact these characters will have on the upcoming season's plot is unknown, but the newly released images from TVLine can be put in some context with the trailers and the Stargirl season 1 finale.

The Stargirl season 2 trailer showcased the main crew of season one, including Stargirl, Yolanda/Wild Cat (Yvette Monreal), Beth/Dr. Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington) and Rick/Hourman (Cameron Gellman). It appears these heroes are seeking out some new crime after the action-packed season 1 finale. With the drooling excitement of summer school as a priority for Courtney Whitmore, clearly, she is craving some action.

Stargirl Season 2 Spoilers

An image of McHale sitting at a diner, hopefully, means that the audience can see him return as Starman in the second season. He is also shown to be speaking to a waitress, whose character is not confirmed but is revealed to be someone of importance. Furthermore, another image shows Pat talking to a new character named Jenny (Ysa Penarejo), who is the daughter of Alan Scott, a.k.a. the Green Lantern. As shown in the second trailer for Stargirl season 2, Courtney seems a little jealous of Jenny's arrival in town. Is her step-dad Pat relieving this tension?

Jonathan Cake (Rebecca) is also shown dressed in a suit and tie at a restaurant playing a new villain named Richard Swift, or The Shade. What threat he might pose to the JSA is not entirely clear through his civilian clothing. It is known that Swift is an infamous alumnus of the elusive Injustice Society and most likely isn't to be trusted. Other photos show off the JSA in full costume, awaiting something unknown. A final image shows the JSA in civilian form, clearly shocked at something or someone right in front of them.

Whatever the true context of these revealing images is, certainly, some new trouble and drama are at bay to keep Courtney Whitmore's summer school sadness a distant thought. Some other known cast members joining the show in season 2 include Nick Tarabay (Arrow) as Eclipso, John Wesley Shipp (The Flash) as Jay Garrick, and Jim Gaffigan as Thunderbolt. The show is already confirmed for a third season, which was expected with all of the attention and viewership the series has gotten.

Stargirl season 2 will premiere on August 10th, 2021, at 8/7 C on The CW.
