Stargirl has continued to entrance audiences ever since its official move to The CW, and it looks like audiences will have one more reason to get excited when the show's next season comes around. Of course, things still have to get settled in its current nail-biting second season before any of that can happen, but that just means the buildup will be that much sweeter, especially now that Joel McHale has gotten a big promotion.

Season 3 of Stargirl will now prominently feature a character who's been built up since the beginning, and the actor behind him is ready to roll. Former Community star McHale, who plays Sylvester Pemberton/Starman on the show, will enjoy a bump up to series regular in season 3 after spending the past 2 seasons appearing only in flashbacks and brief glimpses here and there, like a colorful sasquatch.

McHale made it official during a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, offering his gratitude to those involved for beefing up his role. "I'm very happy to be a part of the show," he commented to guest host Arsenio Hall, "so thank you Geoff Johns who invented it." The series has clearly been setting up some big developments over the current season, including the eventual re-introduction of Jim Gaffigan as the genie Thunderbolt alongside his new master, so it will be interesting to see how McHale's character makes that transition.

Stargirl Justice Society of America The CW DC Comics

Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as high schooler Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, who learns all about a group of fallen heroes led by Starman and sets out to revitalize their legendary Justice Society of America. With the help of her stepdad Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), who ran with the JSA as a bit of a sidekick, she gathers new friends and unlikely allies to her cause. Apparently, this happens just in time to deal with plenty of new evils that are beginning to show their faces.

While the first season of Stargirl led audiences (and the characters themselves) to believe that Pemberton had died in a disastrous final battle along with the rest of the original Justice Society, several cutaway shots since then have teased his return. These shots have shown Pemberton, or at least somebody who looks just like him and seems to know his life, apparently slowly making his way to Blue Valley, Nebraska, the small-town setting of Stargirl. Given the efforts of Stargirl and the rest of her new hero friends to start a new JSA, his help likely wouldn't be unwelcome.

It's unclear exactly how McHale's character will officially make his jump from guest star to full series regular, but there's a good chance that audiences can expect a big reveal sometime soon. After all, the sinister Eclipso definitely seems to be a bit much for the current JSA to handle. Maybe all they need is the aid of a legend.

Stargirl airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
