It appears that Bethesda's next flagship RPG release, Starfield, may have its own suite of raytracing features. Up until now, the details of the game's engine and its specific technical features haven't been discussed all that much, and nothing had been said about whether the game would support some of the cutting-edge rendering techniques that are being employed in the industry.

In fact, most of Starfield's technical aspects are still rather mysterious, with Bethesda having focused more on discussing the game's content than its technological backing. It is known that it's running on an up-to-date version of the developer's battle-tested Creation Engine, and according to some of the latest reveals, Bethesda may have successfully transplanted RTX functionality into it.

Specifically, this latest information comes from one of the Internet profiles of Bethesda's Germain Mazac, a graphics programmer. Under the "Experience" tab, it says he's been working on implementing pixel-based rendering, indirect lighting, and RTX integration in Starfield, which has massive implications for the game's rendering pipeline. It's always been clear that Bethesda's largest game to date is Starfield, but RT-ready visuals imply the presence of a whole suite of advanced features, such as DLSS and FSR, giving users way more tools to customize how their game looks and performs.

Naturally, it's also worth remembering that getting RTX into games and engines that might not natively support it isn't an impossibility anymore. Nvidia recently showcased TES 3: Morrowind's RTX Remix visual retrofit, which allowed its engineers to quickly and efficiently turn Bethesda's old game into something that's way more modern-looking and impressive. If Mazac's profile is anything to go by, Nvidia's recent showcase may have given the community a hint as to what its next major gaming collaboration might be.

Those worried about Bethesda using Creation Engine for Starfield due to the engine's penchant for buggy behavior shouldn't be too worried about its modernity, all things considered. A recent Starfield analysis outlined substantial Creation Engine upgrades already, and the apparent presence of RTX features suggests that the game won't be lagging behind its contemporaries on the visual side of things in the first place.

Rumors suggest that Starfield pre-orders may be going up soon, and if that's the case, Bethesda may also be preparing a proper raytracing showcase for the community to check out. Regardless of whether that's the case or not, the game is supposed to be coming out in 2023, and if it really does have an RT-ready rendering pipeline, more information about it should be coming in soon.
