Bethesda Game Studios recently became one of the stars of 2021’s E3 online showcase due to its release of the first teaser trailer for its upcoming sci-fi title Starfield. Now, Bethesda Senior Lighting Artist Keith Beltramini has revealed that the development team did not use any cinematic tools to create the short but visually amazing trailer video.

Starfield was first announced to the public as Bethesda’s next IP back in E3 2019. At the time, the demand for Elder Scrolls 6 was very high, and fans were clamoring for any news about the title. Therefore, there were mixed reactions from fans regarding the announcement of a new game that would seemingly take place in outer space. Now, fans seem to be anticipating the Starfield’s release, and have even started to generate their own fan content such as creating a Starfield-inspired arcade cabinet.

On his personal site, Beltramini shared the first trailer video of Starfield alongside some stills of the teaser. For fans who have seen the footage already, these visuals may not be anything new. However, at the bottom of the post, Beltramini mentioned that the trailer was produced without the help of any cinematic tools. This means that all of the available trailer footage was created, rendered, and produced through Bethesda's own Creation Engine 2. With Starfield being the first of Bethesda’s games to be made using this new 3D engine, the trailer video definitely seemed like a strategic way to show off the rendering capabilities of the game development software.

According to Beltramini, he worked closely with the game’s director Istvan Pely to assist in the art direction for lighting and mood within the trailer. The stills posted on his site showcase his work very well and provide an out-of-this-world feeling that many sci-fi fans will likely appreciate. Though most of the images featured the mysterious yet iconic Starfield ship, they do an amazing job of setting the outer space scene and astral environment of the space adventure title.

With Starfield slated for release in November 2022, Bethesda is likely going to share more information about the title in the months leading to the launch. Given how stunning the initial trailer is for the video game, it is highly possible that succeeding content and videos will follow the same aesthetic quality of the first one. Hopefully Bethesda will also share more details especially about the gameplay, Starfield main character, and story narrative in order to provide fans with the bigger picture.
