Bethesda's hotly anticipated game, Starfield, may skip E3 2020, suggests Todd Howard. The company has already confirmed that Starfield will be skipping E3 2019, but a new quote suggests that the game may sit out next year's event too.

As part of its Unfiltered interview series, IGN asked Starfield game director Todd Howard when fans may get to see the game. Howard told the publication that "everyone should be patient," explaining that he likes to leave as little time as possible between when a game is shown off and its release date.

"I like when you really see the game to when it’s out [to be] as short as possible. As short as people will let me," said the developer. Howard also suggested that he would like to announce and release a game in a week, as this would be long enough “just to get people excited, to have those moments of ‘I saw it’, some trailers, let it percolate in your mind.”

If Starfield does skip E3 2020, that would be hugely disappointing for fans. The game was officially announced with a teaser trailer at E3 2018 but nearly no details have been revealed about the game, other than confirmation that Bethesda is developing it for next-generation consoles.

Some may say that Bethesda should take as long as it needs to finish Starfield, a game which has been in some state of development for several years. Several high profile Bethesda releases, such as Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, have released with game-breaking bugs, so fans don't want to rush the studio if it is trying to take its time with Starfield. Fans may be understanding if the development team would prefer to keep working on the game, without having to think about marketing it at E3.

What Howard said isn't a confirmation that Starfield will skip E3 2020, the developer is just asking fans to be realistic. Progress on Starfield does seem to be going well as Bethesda has set up another development team to help work on the game and job listings suggest that voice acting work on the game has begun. These are all good signs and it means that Bethesda may be prepared to show off the game sooner, not later. However, if Starfield does end up skipping E3 2020, at least now fans won't be so surprised.

Starfield has yet to receive an official release date, and currently lacks official platforms.
