The Prismatic Shard, a mysterious, rainbow-colored gemstone, is one of the most useful and valuable items in Stardew Valley. It is also notoriously rare, with some players spending an entire in-game year without finding a single one. Considering their role in completing quests and obtaining certain items, this can grow frustrating.

Never fear — there are a number of ways to obtain Prismatic Shards in Stardew Valley and put them to use. Though it can still take some time and effort to find one, knowing where to look can be a big help for players.

Prismatic Shard Locations

There are a number of potential locations where players can find a Prismatic Shard, though most of them hold only a small chance of producing one:

  • 0.09% chance to appear in the chum bucket of a Fish Pond populated by Rainbow Trout. The pond must have at least 9 fish to activate the chance of a Prismatic Shard appearing.
  • 0.1% chance to drop from Serpents and Mummies in Skull Cavern.
  • 0.4% chance to appear inside an Omni Geode.
  • 4% chance of finding one in a Treasure Chest in Skull Cavern.
  • 4% chance to drop from an Iridium Node in Skull Cavern, the Volcano Dungeon, or the Quarry.
  • 25% chance to drop from a Mystic Node (a dark blue stone with curlicue patterns on it) in Skull Cavern.
  • There is one available in a chest the first time the player reaches the end of the Volcano Dungeon.

The most reliable way of obtaining Prismatic Shards is with the Statue of True Perfection, which produces one Prismatic Shard per day. However, this Statue is quite difficult to get. It is rewarded upon reaching 100% perfection, as indicated by the Perfection Tracker in Mr. Qi's Walnut Room on Ginger Island. Prismatic Shard Uses

These gemstones have a wide variety of uses in Stardew Valley. One can be donated to the Museum, which is necessary for the "Complete Collection" achievement. They can also be sold for 2000g each. However, players may find their other uses more helpful in various aspects of gameplay.

Gifting

The Prismatic Shard is a Loved gift for all villagers except Haley; thus, some players might wish to save their Shards to give to their favorite bachelor or bachelorette, or other villager with whom they are trying to win favor. Each villager has at least a few other Loved gifts that are usually easier to find; however, Prismatic Shards can be very useful when trying to maximize one's relationship with each NPC.

Weapons

One Prismatic Shard is required to obtain the Galaxy Sword, one of the best weapons available in Stardew Valley. To get it, take a Prismatic Shard to Calico Desert and stand in the center of the three obelisks there; the shard will transform into this mythical weapon.

Players can also use Prismatic Shards, alongside Cinder Shards, to enchant tools and weapons in Ginger Island's Volcano Forge. These magical bonuses can add additional effects to the player's items.

Trades

On Thursdays, the trader in Calico Desert will sell the player one Magic Rock Candy in exchange for three Prismatic Shards. This food item provides massive buffs to the player's Mining, Attack, and Defense, as well as minor Luck and Speed boosts.

For a more sinister trade, the player can take a Prismatic Shard to the Witch's Hut and interact with the Dark Shrine of Selfishness. This will turn the player's children into doves, permanently removing them from the game.

Quests

Currently, the only quest that involves Prismatic Shards is Mr. Qi's Four Precious Stones, which players can receive in the Walnut Room. To complete it, bring four Prismatic Shards to Mr. Qi by the deadline.
