The indie life and farming simulation game Stardew Valley is insanely popular, and has sold over 10 million copies since 2016 according to its lone developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. One of the stand-out reasons for its success is the charming, lively little community of Pelican Town right next door to the farm where players make their living, so it only makes sense that someone would venture to recreate that locale in 3D with Media Molecule's Dreams.
A Twitch streamer from Oregon named Tooshi used the robust creation tools in Dreams, which was finally released today on the PlayStation 4, to make a full-scale model of Pelican Town with a simple clay or toy-like aesthetic reminiscent of the 2019 Link's Awakening remake. It's a pretty spot-on job, though when the player character takes over at the end of Tooshi's introduction video posted to Twitter Thursday it's clear that only the town proper is accessible: No beach, no mountain, no forest.
However, fans of Stardew Valley will be happy to know that the lovable townsfolk who really make Pelican Town what it is all seem to be wandering around of their own accord. The troubled alcoholic Shane still walks to work at JojaMart, the eccentric and spiritual Emily hides under an awning at the museum, and many other denizens are peppered throughout the town.
While Dreams was in early access for some time before its official release, that did not stop a community of creators from making incredible games, simulations, and images using the platform. There's no doubt that practice will continue now that Media Molecule's latest title is out.
That creativity could come in the form of Dream's high-quality breakfast foods, recreations of mechanics native to games like The Last of Us, or something like Tooshi's Pelican Town that offers a new perspective on a classic place. His build is available to download and explore on the Dreams website.
Those who just want to see Tooshi's creation because they're looking to be more immersed in Barone's world can take solace in the fact that Barone has expressed interest in creating Stardew Valley tie-in games. Perhaps someday those other titles will also get such a loving, well-crafted recreation by fans.
