Stardew Valley Dated for Switch, Launching Without Multiplayer

Stardew Valley Update

Last February, Nintendo announced that the popular farm simulation game Stardew Valley would be making its way to the Nintendo Switch, and now we know exactly when fans can get their hands on it. As announced earlier today by Stardew Valley developer Eric Barone, the game will launch for Nintendo's console/handheld hybrid on October 5th for $14.99.

The Nintendo Switch version of Stardew Valley should be the same as other versions of the game, though with the added benefit of being able to take it on the go. As noted by Barone, Stardew Valley's Switch release marks the first time the game has been made available on a portable platform, which could be enough incentive to convince some fans to buy it again.

Another reason why Stardew Valley fans may want to pick up the game on the Nintendo Switch is because of the promise of online multiplayer. While all versions of the game will eventually receive a multiplayer update, the Switch version of Stardew Valley has first dibs when the feature is added to the game at some point in 2018. Some fans may be disappointed that multiplayer won't be available at launch, but it's reassuring to know that the feature is still in the works at all.

Stardew Valley co-op

By making online multiplayer a timed-exclusive feature for the Nintendo Switch version of Stardew Valley, it's clear that publisher Chucklefish has faith in the Switch port. Perhaps if the game is as successful as Chucklefish hopes, it could lead to further partnerships between it and Nintendo.

Nintendo has shown a willingness to collaborate with indie developers in the past, as we've seen in previous promotions like its Shovel Knight amiibo. If Stardew Valley is a hit on the Switch, maybe we will see an official version of the Pokemon mod that was released for the game a couple of years ago or the addition of Nintendo-themed items.

Regardless of any Switch-exclusive content in Stardew Valley, Nintendo fans should be excited to finally get their hands on the critically-acclaimed game. Whether it finds the same success on the Switch as it has elsewhere remains to be seen, but fans won't have to wait long to find out.

Stardew Valley is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch release is set for October 5th.
