Although farming is what drives the main gameplay of Stardew Valley, part of what has made it stand out from the rest is the extensive life-sim elements at play. The valley is filled with a wide array of people, all of whom the player can get to know on a pretty intimate level.

Eventually, players will find the one right for them and will look to start a family in Stardew Valley. It is possible for the player to get two children, but they will have to put the work in to make a house a home, welcoming their own little farmers into the world. Here's how children work in Stardew Valley, and how to get them.

Woo A Bachelor

Before children can even be considered, the player must first find a relationship that they believe will go all the way. There are 12 potential dating candidates in the game, with no restrictions on which genders can date or have children.

Players will need to raise the friendship level of their chosen partner to 8 hearts by giving them gifts and talking to them regularly. Once this is met, the player must buy a Bouquet from Pierre and present it to them, at which point the game will consider them the player's boyfriend/girlfriend.

Get Married

As the old adage goes, first comes love, then comes marriage. For this step, players will need to get a very special & rare item. Firstly, the bridge on the beach needs to be repaired, which costs 300 Wood. Next, the player needs to wait for a rainy day.

On a rainy day, head over the bridge on the beach and find the Old Mariner, a unique character who sells a unique item. Purchase from him the Mermaid's Pendant for 5000g, and present it to a potential spouse once their friendship has reached 10 hearts. Three days later the wedding will take place in the town square.

Upgrade the Farmhouse

While the small square shack the player starts with is nice and cozy, it's not a very responsible place to raise a child, so changes must be made. Before a child can be considered, the farmhouse must be upgraded not once but twice.

All upgrades can be purchased from Robin with enough materials and take three days to complete (not counting festival days). The first upgrade will add a kitchen and separate bedroom, it costs 10,000g and 450 Wood. The second upgrade adds two upstairs rooms, including a nursery, it will cost a whopping 50,000g and 150 Hardwood.

Wait for your Spouse to Ask About Children

Once all of the prior conditions are met, and the player has been married for at least 7 days, the spouse may ask about children. There is a 5% chance of this happening every night, just after the player has gone to bed. If the player says no, the spouse may ask again another night, as long as the player keeps their relationship healthy. However, if they say yes, the wait begins.

If the relationship is heterosexual, then the baby will be biological, while if the couple is the same gender, they will adopt a baby. Either way, it will take 14 days to arrive, at which point players will get the opportunity to name their child and officially become a parent.

Watch the Child Grow Up

Unfortunately, Stardew Valley doesn't have the capacity to see children grow up into full-grown villagers with their own lives, but they do at least grow out of being a baby. For the first 14 days, the baby will remain in their crib at all times, seemingly always asleep.

Once this is over, the baby will start standing up in their crib during the day. The player can now start building a relationship with them, as interacting with them will see the player playfully throw the baby in the air and catch them.

After another 14 days, they will begin leaving the crib during the day and crawling around the farmhouse. After a further 28 days, they reach the final phase of their life as a toddler, walking around the house and sleeping in a regular bed at night, meaning players can now have their second child if they wish.

Stardew Valley is currently available on Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS Vita & Xbox One.
