Stardew Valley is known for its endearing cast of characters, with the first they meet being their own grandfather. Though Grandpa doesn’t appear much in the game, he makes a strong impression in the opening cutscene. There, he gives his grandchild (the player) a sealed envelope and bids them to open it when life becomes a bit too much for them to handle. After, he passes in his sleep. This emotional cutscene eventually leads to the player’s experience in Stardew Valley as the sealed envelope contains a deed to Grandpa’s old farm.

That said, players have recently focused their efforts on a different aspect of the opening cutscene — Grandpa’s bed. Recently, there’s been an influx of Stardew Valley mods that alter the appearance of Grandpa and his bed. While some present small, silly changes to the opening cutscene, others are more absurd, but then that’s what makes these mods so amusing.

Grandpa Bed Mods in Stardew Valley

Admittedly, Stardew Valley’s opening cutscene, and particularly Grandpa’s bed, seem out of place when compared to the rest of the game’s aesthetics. Though an old tweet from ConcernedApe reveals why. Apparently, he’d added the opening cutscene into the game less than a month before its initial launch. He even poked fun at Grandpa’s bed, calling it a “cot.”

Still, players’ jokes about the bed never truly took off — that is, until now. Recently, the modding community has been releasing add-ons that change up Grandpa’s bed in the game’s opening cutscene. One amusing mod for Stardew Valley is the “Slightly Worse Grandpa Bed” mod, which breaks off one of the bed’s legs. Another mod makes it so there’s a sizable pee stain on the sheets.

These, however, are only the tip of the iceberg. There are even more absurd mods, like “Grandpa is the bed,” which merges Grandpa and the bed, turning him into a four-legged monstrosity. Another modder took the time to create the “Playing Ping Pong on Grandpa’s Bed” mod, which inserts Evelyn and George (villagers the player should befriend early in Stardew Valley) into the opening cutscene. As Grandpa says his goodbyes to his grandkid, his two elderly friends play ping pong on his bed, and it even comes with the tabletop net.

Then, there are the even more absurd mods. The “Grandpa’s Bed Mouthful Mode” mod makes it so Grandpa in the opening cutscene (and his bed) have been devoured by none other than Kirby. From inside the pink and lovable video game character, the player can still see the outline of their Grandpa as he presents them with the sealed envelope. Even worse is the “Robin Tricked You as Grandpa to Buy Buildings” mod, which replaces Grandpa with Robin in a Grandpa mask. Everything was a ruse to get the player to move into Pelican Town and avail of Robin’s services.

For those with a much darker sense of humor, the “Worse Dying Grandpa” mod is an excellent option. It removes the bed altogether and makes Grandpa’s expression far less… peaceful — complete with flies hovering over his body. The “Make Grandpa a Joja Cola Addict” mod works as well, filling Grandpa’s room with hundreds of Joja Cola cans and turning the elderly man blue.

However, for those looking to improve the opening cutscene without breaking immersion, look no further than the “Grandpa's Bed - Better Introduction for Content Patcher” mod. Unlike many of the mods stated above, this one was released in 2020. It gives Grandpa a proper bed, with a wooden frame and headboard, while also tweaking the other visual aspects of Stardew Valley’s opening cutscene. Because while the recent Grandpa Bed mods have been hilarious, it’s nice to see the old man lying in a comfortable bed.

Stardew Valley is available on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
