A Stardew Valley player recently embarked on a cold-hearted quest to marry and subsequently divorce all available characters. As a record of the failed marriages, the player built a trophy room in honor of their lost loves.

Stardew Valley is not generally so cold-blooded. Many players enjoy the life sim for its laid back, relaxing gameplay and its cast of lovable characters. But one player recently decided that they were going to have a different kind of fun with the title.

Reddit user Alarmed-Stage-7066 claims to have gotten the serial divorce idea from their daughter, who suggested that the player construct a trophy room to commemorate the failed partnerships. The Redditor said they learned that their daughter is “stone cold” after she suggested the idea.

Most commenters agreed that even with Stardew Valley’s marriage problems, these actions were devilish. But the divorces may not be so cold-blooded to completionists. When confronted about the heartlessness of divorcing every available character, Alarmed-Stage-7066 stated “I need those cutscenes.” Another user chimed in with “And items.” Acquiring every one of the game’s items requires a few broken hearts.

If players want to acquire all in-game items, they have to marry all available characters. For example, some players in the thread were unaware that Krobus is a romance option and also has a unique item attached to him. Players cannot technically marry the monster, but he does become a roommate if players pursue that option. Even if he is one Stardew Valley’s worst romance options, players in the thread still wanted his unique dialogue and item for their collections.

Most players in the thread were able to have fun with the concept of divorce trophies, though. One even remarked “That’s diabolical… I love it.” Even if it means breaking every single virtual heart in some of Stardew Valley’s best partners, players were able to laugh off the whole situation. One commenter expressed an inability to be mean to characters and simply followed the thread out of curiosity.

For most players, divorcing everyone in Stardew Valley is just too cold. But completionists are clearly willing to do anything for the sweet taste of total completion. But Stardew Valley has some dark secrets and a few players see this serial divorce issue as just par for the course. Regardless of how players feel, the dedication to making a divorce trophy is admirable, even if it feels a little heartless. After all, it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Stardew Valley is currently available on mobile, PC, PS4, PS Vita, Switch, and Xbox One.
