As Pelican Town's mayor, Lewis is one of the first characters that players meet upon starting their new life in Stardew Valley. He does everything he can to keep things running smoothly, and maintain the town's peaceful, harmonious atmosphere.

Of course, being mayor comes with challenges. Lewis can't help but worry about the abandoned community center, the town's budget, and the secrecy of his relationship with a certain ranch owner. But that's what friends are for, and that's where the player comes in. Building a friendship with Lewis can prove beneficial to both parties — here's how to win his favor.

Gift Guide

Lewis greeting the player

To build relationships in Stardew Valley, all players need to do is demonstrate their generosity. To win over Lewis, simply chat with him and offer gifts, bearing in mind his preferences below. Any gifts given on his birthday, Spring 7, will count for 8x the usual friendship points.

Players can usually find Lewis in his manor during the day, though he'll sometimes be making the rounds through the town's local businesses. In the evenings, find him at the Saloon.

Loved Gifts

The best possible options to give Lewis, each of these will increase the player's friendship with him by 80 points. Save them up for gifts when trying to win him over.

  • Hot Pepper
  • Green Tea
  • Cooked Dishes: Autumn's Bounty, Glazed Yams, Vegetable Medley
  • All universal loves

Liked Gifts

When Lewis' favorites are hard to find, these prove to be good substitutes. Worth 45 points each, they'll still go a decent way towards building a friendship.

  • Blueberry
  • Cactus Fruit
  • Coconut
  • All universal likes (e.g. vegetables, fruit tree fruits, artisan goods, gemstones)

Disliked & Hated Gifts

Some items should never, under any circumstances, be presented to Lewis. Though Hated gifts are worse than Disliked, any of the following will decrease the player's friendship with the town's mayor.

  • All milk items
  • Salmonberry
  • Wild Horseradish
  • Holly
  • Quartz
  • All universal dislikes (e.g. artifacts, bombs, fish, etc.)
  • All universal hates (e.g. trash, fossils)

Interactions & Effects On Friendship

Mayor's Shorts quest

Quests

  • Mayor's ShortsOn Summer 3, Lewis will send the player a letter asking them to discreetly retrieve his "lucky purple shorts" from Marnie's bedroom. (Note that the player must have at least two hearts with Marnie.) If the farmer returns them, Lewis will reward them with 750g, and friendship will increase by one heart. Of course, players can also play a prank on the mayor, by either putting the shorts in the Luau Soup or in the Grange Display at the Stardew Valley Fair. Both result in entertaining dialogue, but only the latter decreases friendship with Lewis.
  • Mayor's Need: On Summer 21 in Year 2, Lewis sends another letter, this time requesting a bottle of truffle oil. As with the previous quest, the reward is 750g and one friendship heart.

  • "Help Wanted" objectives: On the notice board outside Pierre's store, Lewis may ask the player to bring him a random item, or request that they slay a certain number of a specific monster in the minds. Any of these quests will net the player 150 friendship points.

Heart Event

Once the player has achieved six hearts with both Lewis and Marnie, enter town between 7pm - 11 pm. The farmer will overhear the two discussing their relationship and the necessity of keeping it a secret. Once Lewis spots the player, he'll ask if he can count on their discretion. Players can either promise to keep quiet, or claim they intend to spill the beans. The former increases friendship with Lewis, while the latter will cause it to drop.

Friendship Perks

Spaghetti recipe letter

At any friendship level, the player has a chance to receive 500g in the mail from Lewis, as a gift from the Stardew Valley Agricultural Fund. The higher the friendship level, the more likely this is to occur.

Lewis will also send the player two recipes in the mail, allowing them to use their fresh vegetables to cook some useful food.

  • Spaghetti: Sent at three hearts. This simple dish restores 75 energy and 33 health.
  • Eggplant Parmesan: Sent at seven hearts. This recipe offers a much larger restorative boost, at 175 energy and 78 health. It also provides +1 to Mining and +3 to Defense, making it great for spelunking.
