New ‘Starcraft 2’ Heart of the Swarm Trailer

By | 5 years ago

With BlizzCon 2011 in full swing, exciting new features from the legendary developer have begun to flow out at a fast pace, saturating fans of World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2 with new features and reveals. We’ve got hands-on details with the Pandaren and Monks, new unit changes for Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, and now a brand new trailer full of action-packed moments, main characters and a quest for revenge.

The new trailer shows that the galaxy is in a dangerous place after the events of Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, with Mengsk still on the run from a now human – at least in appearance – Sarah Kerrigan. Her once-unified Zerg have split off into seperate broods, some with new Queens at the head of them. As she seeks to exact revenge on the one who abandoned her to her doom back in Brood War, Kerrigan will no only be on missions of destruction but will be attempting to regain control of her former broods through brute force. While this is all happening, the Terran army is still based on Char and the Protoss threat is only growing larger – as the three races come to a head, they’ll be combating internal struggles that could topple their entire species to the brink of destruction. Suffice to say, Heart of the Swarm will be a plot-intensive game:

With scorned lovers, vengeance missions, and a plethora of action-packed sequences, the trailer is certainly showing off the good side of Starcraft 2.

At 1:35 onwards in the video, you can see all of the new units and features currently revealed for Heart of the Swarm. At 1:56, you can see the Ultralisk perform it’s new Burrow Charge ability, in which it burrows underground and pops up in between a batch of marines in under a second. The Ultralisks previously had a tendency to get mixed in battles with lots of units going on, and this new way of coming underneath the opponent is no doubt going to be a great addition for the Zerg. If you don’t mind not blinking, you can also see the Protoss energy-based attack which disables mineral fields literally one second later – an attack that will no doubt be a favorite for pestering the macro of players.

Just moments after that, you can see Collapsible Rocks, a previously unmentioned new terrain piece. Units can target a pile of rocks which will collapse down in a pattern when destroyed, creating a barrier of the well-known Destructible Rocks. It’s an optional defense form that will no doubt be a great bonus for fortifying positions.

The Zerg-central expansion is expected to be released in mid-2012, and you can see an extended edition of the previously-released Campaign trailer here. We’ll keep you informed as more Starcraft 2 news swarms out.

What do you think of the trailer? Did it do a good job of showing off Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm?
