Last year's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order turned out to be a very well-received game and once again restored people's faith in EA. In fact, some Star Wars fans felt that the game was a fitting spiritual successor to the cancelled Force Unleashed 3, which made it as far as the prototype stage before it was cancelled.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed put players in the shoes of Darth Vader's secret apprentice as he eventually rebels against his master and may have even inspired the recent Star Wars films, but the franchise unfortunately ended after the second game. During a recent livestream, however, voice actor Sam Witwer discussed the details of the unmade Force Unleashed 3.
In the recent installment of IGN's Watch From Home Theater, actors Rahul Kohli and Witwer watched The Empire Strikes Back in celebration of the film's 40th anniversary. While sharing stories about that Star Wars sequel's creation, Witwer (who provided the voice of Vader's apprentice, Galen Starkiller in The Force Unleashed) turned the discussion to his own cancelled sequel, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 3. This is great news for fans of the games, as The Force Unleashed II ended on a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, due to that sequel's troubled development history, LucasArts cancelled Force Unleashed 3 and the story was never resolved.
Witwer--who has shared behind the scenes info on his character Starkiller before--mentioned the ending of The Force Unleashed II, which had Starkiller cutting off Vader's hand and capturing him. It turns out this was all part of Vader's plan, as Witwer says, "the Force Unleashed I and II games were all about Vader toying with Starkiller." This was to be highlighted during the big fight with Vader when he would show off the true extent of his powers, with him proclaiming, "I am Lord Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith." As Witwer put it, "He's no match for this guy."
Apart from revealing plot details from The Force Unleashed 3, the rest of the video was spent discussing scenes from The Empire Strikes Back, such as the iconic scene where Luke chooses to fall into the bowels of Cloud City rather than join his father Darth Vader. While many fans see this as a sign of confidence, Witwer had a different interpretation of that scene. After learning that his father is actually one of the most evil people in the galaxy and that he would be forced to join him in the dark side, Witwer believed he was overcome with despair and decided to leap to his death. A pretty depressing interpretation, but it's a fittingly grim view from the current voice of Darth Maul.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia. The Force Unleashed 3 is still cancelled.
