If you players of Star Wars: The Old Republic have been appreciating the team’s commitment to patching out some of the game’s more offensive glitches and exploits, then get used to it. According to the game’s own director, BioWare will be keeping up their hard work and plan on releasing patches and fixes for The Old Republic on a weekly basis.
Before you get too excited, that isn’t to say that fans will be seeing the aggressive expansion content being planned sooner rather than later. We’re talking more about game exploits and potentially unfair ways of unbalancing the game’s systems. BioWare has already shown that they’ve got the attitude to back up their gameplay by banning exploitative accounts right out of the gate, even if some of the more entertaining glitches remain unfixed – hopefully for much longer.
On the official blog, the game’s Director James Ohlen commented on just what BioWare meant when they said they would be supporting the systems and customers immediately:
“Almost every week we will be releasing a new patch. These weekly patches are almost entirely focused on bug fixes, minor balance changes and fixing any exploits in the game. These issues are the highest priority items at the studio. They are reviewed by senior leadership on a daily basis. Bug fixes usually take longer than a week to get into the game because we need to fix the issue and then test the fix. Some bugs take longer than that because of the complexity of the issue.
“There are issues that we will fix immediately. These are rare and not every issue can be fixed in this manner. We usually reserve these “emergency fixes” for bugs that are stopping players from playing the game or to exploits that could unbalance the entire game if not corrected.
“Any game as big and as complex as The Old Republic will have bugs. We’re working as hard as we can to find, fix, test and patch the game to eliminate as many of them as possible.”
Honesty goes a long way, but it’s hard for customers and observers alike to not admire the kind of dedication BioWare is at least claiming at this point. Nothing can make a game whither on the vine like a lack of support and updates (see Fallout: New Vegas) and considering how few glitches have been cited in The Old Republic so far, they’re off on the right foot.
The various SWTOR progression guides the developers released seemed like a great gesture for the fan base, so hopefully that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Now if BioWare could just get around to releasing the game on Mac they’d have almost every MMO fan pleased. At times the competition between World of Warcraft and The Old Republic may seem more a creation of the media and internet than dollars and cents, but if BioWare can keep up the level of support they’re planning on, that could go a long way in carving out a spot in the genre.
