Star Wars The Force Unleased was meant to be a trilogy, but it seems like gamers will never get a chance to experience the third installment in the dark-side focused action-adventure franchise. The third Force Unleashed game was in development at LucasArts and eyeing up a release for Xbox One and PS4 (which were next-gen consoles at the time), but was sadly cancelled long before its launch. Although gamers will never be able to play it, there is now a chance to get a look at what could have been.
In 2015 some details about the cancelled game were revealed by former members of the development team and it was revealed that Force Unleashed 3 was planned as a more open-world title that would have seen Starkiller (the protagonist of the series) teaming up with Vader to fight off a new threat from the emperor. Although development didn't get a chance to complete the game, there was a working prototype that showed off some of the game's mechanics. Thanks to a very delayed leak, Star Wars fans can now get a look under the hood at the cancelled time.
Here is the footage that shows off the basic movements and mechanics in the game...
There's nothing too mind-blowing in this video in terms of mechanics, but it is cool to see the balance feature and the saber fighting in action. Watching the prototype footage will likely make many Star Wars extended universe fans sad that they won't be getting a chance to have Starkiller leap onto an AT-ST and wrestle it to the ground. Luckily, there are lots of other Star Wars games in the pipeline now, so hopefully things like Battlefront 2 will help fill the void left by The Force Unleashed 3's cancellation.
What do you think of the prototype footage? Would you have played a third installment of the franchise on Xbox One or PS4? Let us know in the comments.
Star Wars The Force Unleashed 3 has been canceled and no longer has a release window.
