May began with Star Wars Day, a celebration of all things in the multimedia franchise that included a bevy of announcements. Among the announcements made on May 4, 2020 was that the Oculus-exclusive VR game Vader Immortal is coming to PlayStation VR, but to cap off the month, its developer ILMxLAB has announced that a new title called Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge will be launching on Oculus later this year.

Based on the live attraction from Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, this "action-adventure VR experience" will feature new and iconic characters, use multiple styles of gameplay, and have varying difficulty settings according to ILMxLAB's announcement today. It will be set on the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, and ILMxLAB's Executive-in-Charge Vicki Dobbs Beck promises a "connected and complimentary" experience that will build lore between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

According to Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Executive Scott Trowbridge, this experience will give fans the chance to "discover new stories" through characters and places on Batuu that will ultimately allow "guests" to "immerse themselves ... both inside and outside our parks." It certainly sounds like an interesting prospect for Star Wars fans, particularly with theme parks closed due to coronavirus concerns, but not much is said as to when the game will be available.

Though games like Vader Immortal have proven the viability of Star Wars VR titles, especially through ILMxLAB, there are plenty of other things in development for the immensely popular universe. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will spawn a whole franchise for EA following the first game's success last year, for example.

At the same time, despite its controversial first impression, EA's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 continues to see play as a first-person shooter tying together many aspects of the movies. After it was announced that the game would be ending its ongoing development, over 50,000 Battlefront 2 players signed a petition to keep it alive with paid DLC.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has affected some Star Wars games as well, though its impact can be most clearly seen with the shut down of parks that serve as the inspiration for Tales from the Galaxy's Edge. Switch and PS4 ports of Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer have been delayed due to complications with working from home, and time will tell whether this new VR title suffers the same fate.
