Lucasfilm and Disney have applied for a new trademark for something called Star Wars: Rivals. Virtually nothing is known about what Rivals could be, but it could possibly be related to one of the many Star Wars games in development.

The trademark was first spotted by Star Wars fan site The Star Wars Post and searching for Star Wars: Rivals within the trademark database on the United States Patent and Trademark Office's website results in two entries. One of those entries specifically mentions the ability to use the trademark for video games:

Apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images; audio books; audio recordings; audio and visual recordings; video game software; computer programs and software; downloadable electronic publications; downloadable game software; downloadable mobile applications; consumer electronics and accessories therefor; eyeglasses and sunglasses and accessories therefor; binoculars; decorative magnets; graduated rulers; microphones; helmets; flotation vests; protective face masks not for medical purposes; snorkels; swimming goggles; swim masks

The trademark was filed on February 23, 2017 and is a pretty standard trademark application, ranging from anything to a video game to an animated series to merchandise like swim masks. There are some Star Wars fans speculating that Star Wars: Rivals could be a new animated series that will replace Star Wars: Rebels, which most likely only has a few more seasons left. But just as likely is the possibility that it could be the title of an upcoming game.

There are three high-profile Star Wars games whose titles have yet to be revealed. One of those is Visceral's Star Wars game, being developed under the creative direction of former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig. Only a small glimpse of in-game footage has been shown from that game, which is reportedly a cinematic, action-adventure game in the vein of the Uncharted franchise.

Another Star Wars game is in development at Motive Studios, a studio led by the former Ubisoft director Jade Raymond, who directed the Assassin's Creed franchise. The game is said to be an action game, and it is assumed that it will be more open-world given Raymond's familiarity with the genre.

The last Star Wars game that comes to mind is the one announced not long ago by Respawn Entertainment, the developer known for making Titanfall and Titanfall 2. That game was teased in its original announcement to follow in the footsteps of the games Respawn and its experienced developers are known for: "a game [... dedicated] to slick, larger-than-life action and fun, [and] groundbreaking mechanics."

Star Wars: Rivals could refer to any or none of these projects, or it could refer to none of them. Considering Disney and Lucasfilm's expanding stable of movies, TV shows, and games, it's hard to predict how exactly the trademark will be used, if at all. But, if Rivals is related to a game then we might see its reveal during EA's E3 2017 press conference.
