Seeing how it's America's 234th birthday, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Nonetheless, I feel obligated to tell you that BioWare isn't even considering bringing Star Wars: The Old Republic to your Xbox 360 or your PS3.

I know what you are thinking: How could BioWare do this to dedicated console gamers? Why are the lives Xbox 360 and PS3 owners so cruelly unfair? Does the studio hate America and the great things it provides like freedom, baseball, and video games playable on a high definition television?

Well, I'm writing to reassure you that BioWare still loves you. BioWare still loves America. It's just that BioWare loves the PC even more, especially when it comes to the MMORPG format.

Oh, don't be so glum. Pick yourself up from the floor, dust yourself off, and take a deep breath. Give me a chance to explain why Bioware is bringing SWTOR exclusively to the PC.

Well, check that. Let Daniel Erickson, lead designer and storywriter, explain it instead:

"I can tell you that it's not anything that we've even discussed. There is nobody anywhere in BioWare laying the groundwork for that because we have a very large complicated game to ship first."

Erickson added that he has "no idea if it's possible" when asked if SWTOR is even potentially compatible with console systems.

Star Wars the Old Republic Twilek Race
The Twi'lek Race

Yes, I know you are sad. I am sad, too. The game's trailer looks great, the ships will be customizable, and it's going to be wildly expensive. But we already explained BioWare's love affair with the PC format, and with the sheer scale and detail that SWTOR promises, it is not really a surprise that BioWare isn't currently looking to land the game in the console realm. Rather, BioWare has the tall task of getting this bull out of the chute while attempting to satisfy the high standards of Star Wars fanboys everywhere, even if it is at your expense.

So, I'm sorry to write you this news. I wish I had the power to change BioWare's market strategy, but alas, BioWare hasn't hired me as one of its high ranking executives. Yet. When it does, I'll make sure they get SWTOR into your hands.

But, in closing, I can give you a little something to smile about on America's birthday. A new multiplayer gameplay clip!

Oh, uh...I probably shouldn't have shown you that clip. I mean, all of those PC gamers will get to tank with Troopers, slash and hack with Jedi Knights, systematically heal with Jedi Consulars, and smuggle with Smugglers. All of those PC gamers will standoff with wave after wave of Imperial Breach Droids. All of those PC gamers will get to experience the vast realm of SWTOR as soon as the Spring of 2011. And well, console gamers won't.

I know. Life is so unfair.

What do you think of the new Star Wars: The Old Republic multiplayer trailer? Think BioWare will ever port the game to consoles?
