Whether or not you feel that Star Wars: the Old Republic will breathe new life into the MMO genre with its emphasis on story over grinding, there’s no denying that the various factions of the Star Wars universe will appeal to millions of potential gamers. Fans of the franchise have shown that they’re willing to forgive quite a lot in the name of a new Star Wars game, and the chance to fight as a legendary Jedi Knight. The Old Republic will be giving players more than a few ways to craft their own particular Jedi, and the latest trailer from BioWare provides a brief look at how those choices will affect progression.

With the explosion of skill trees and upgrade points that have permeated nearly every action game in the past few years, the idea of player progression is not as confusing as it once was. MMO’s make their money off of the concept, but BioWare’s history of giving players the opportunity to craft their own unique story will be making its way into the upgrade system itself.

This should come as a relief, since many gamers may feel that they know just about all there is to know about Jedi, lightsabers, and Force powers.

We’ve seen The Old Republic‘s character creation, but to a true idea of how different a path can be forged by individual players won’t be known until the final product is released.

The latest trailer is just a taste of the slight differences that players will get to choose between, and the various upgrades and attacks that will follow as a result. If you prefer your Jedi to let their sabers do the talking, then this video should be right up your alley:

Fans of the Jedi should be pleased to see that there will be some variation within the player class, but the differences between the Guardian and Sentinel are hard to spot, aside from the twin weapons. We can only hope that the single difference is only being used to make a point here, and not a sign of the black-and-white decisions players will face.

It’s hard to get an idea of just how much The Old Republic will follow the trends set by the other major MMOs, and to what extent they’ll be innovating. The actual gameplay footage we’ve seen paints a familiar picture, but the 1.5 million Beta registrants who’ve lined up clearly think the game will be offering something new.

There’s no question that there’s still room for improvement on the World of Warcraft model, but will BioWare’s mixture of intriguing storylines and bloodthirsty bounty hunters be enough to pull it off? Give us your thoughts in the comments.
