Few games have had the lasting acclaim that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has had. Laying the groundwork for the Mass Effect franchise, BioWare’s take on Star Wars is memorable for many reasons, though fans tend to look back most fondly at its narrative, which stands as a timeless story in the franchise’s universe. Now, that story is headed to the Switch.

Announced during today’s massive Nintendo Direct Livestream, Nintendo confirmed that Knights of the Old Republic is coming to the hybrid console later this year. Releasing on November 11, the port may end up being the most comfortable way to play it on the go, shirking the at-times troublesome touch controls that the game’s mobile ports feature. However, it appears that this is just a port of the game, so don’t expect a bevy of new features.

Notably, this is the classic version of the game, not the full Knights of the Old Republic Remake that Aspyr is developing. In fact, the remake will be a timed exclusive for PlayStation, with no other future platforms being announced quite yet. While it’s likely that the game will make its way to Xbox and PC at some point, a Switch port is a bit murkier depending on how technically demanding it is. However, this classic KOTOR port is a good sign for the future.

Knights of the Old Republic is far from the first classic Star Wars game to come to the Switch. In fact, there’s been something of a special emphasis on bringing older Star Wars games to the Switch for the past year or so, with games like Jedi Outcast and Pod Racer coming to the system. With KOTOR on its way, though, most of the most obvious gaps have been filled.

The notable omission, and one that would have paired nicely with this announcement, is Knights of the Old Republic 2, the often-overlooked sequel developed by Obsidian Entertainment. While the game hasn’t had quite the same impact as the original game did, it expanded on the original in a few interesting ways. No port was announced during the Nintendo Direct, but if Knights of the Old Republic is successful on the system, it’s possible that fans get the sequel at some point.

Regardless, it’s an interesting time to be a Star Wars fan. Between new content like Star Wars Visions and the return of classic content, there’s plenty for fans to take in. Not to mention, Disney is investing pretty heavily into the High Republic setting, so there’s Star Wars content for virtually every medium right now.
